Removing Large Quantity of Unreferenced, unnested XREFs

Somehow through using successive pdf imports into model space, I have ended up with thousands of unreferenced xrefs. I want to remove these as it cloggs up the file. If I do this manually, it takes days (literally). How can I remove them in a batch manner rather than manually? I've seen some conflicting comments that you can use the PURGE command, but I believe you have to (manually) detach them first, which is where the problem lies. These are not nested or even linked to their original content. I hate having to import large pdfs as handy as it is for small imports. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thx.

That's odd because PDFImport command only brings in vector and image files.

How do you end up with a drawing that has unreferenced xrefs?

Could you share a sample dwg using eTransmit command?

WBLOCK command, select only what you see on screen that you want to keep: the newly created file will only contain your selections, nothing more @phil_ferlino and it only takes a minute per file at most.

PLUS there are freebie add-ons at the Autodesk App Store plus LISP tools everywhere to "purge" your files with one click out there too, start exploring, no one has had to spend days purging a file in decades now.

For PDFs that have been imported in using the PDFIMPORT command, look for a folder called PDF Images in the same folder as the DWG file and rename or delete it.
If no PDF Images folder has been created during PDFIMPORT command, try the following:
- Unload the Xrefs by partially opening the file, then unloading the Xrefs (see Partial Open Dialog Box).
- Detach all images from the External References Manager (see About Attaching and Detaching Referenced Drawings (Xrefs)).
- Copy geometry to a new drawing file (see Optimizing the AutoCAD drawing file: Windows/Mac Clipboard Copy and Paste).
- Use WBLOCK to export the content to a new drawing (see Export objects to a drawing file with WBLOCK command).

Thanks everyone for the replies. With the use of the WBLOCK command, I was able to save all geometry AND sheet tabs to a fresh drawing without 10k+ XREFs. Success!!

When using the pdf Import command, I will be watchful of what comes into the XREF panel.

Ideally, we get DWG's from the architect, but sometimes we need to work quickly with what we have, and while the pdf import command is a great addition, it can add alot of clutter to the DWG file.

Curious did you manually goto each layout tab one at a time and execute the WBLOCK command to save the layouts?

Actually no, I simply executed the WBLOCK command, then selected 'entire contents of drawing'. I did not have to select anything, and it grabbed all the geometry AND the sheet tabs and made a *.DWG file. I simply opened it up and all geometry was intact in model space including all the pdf objects, the sheet tabs, but with only 3 XREFs in the XREF panel. It was quite magical and the exact solution that I was hoping for.

When you say “Sheet tabs” are these layout tabs?

Yes, the sheet layout tabs were intact. I thought I would need to recreate these, but I did not have to do this after all.

I'm surprised that assuming you chose the Wblock> Entire Drawing option that also removed the unreferenced xrefs

It sounds like you don't believe me. Yes, I chose entire drawing--try it for yourself. I still have the original drawing so I repeated the operation and saved to a new file, and yes the layout tabs were also saved in the new drawing.

If you're adventurous, perhaps try this free purge app to see if it'll also get rid of your unreferenced xrefs and without having to even open the dwg also supports batch processing:
