How to align conduit onto a Xref background? Help.

Greetings!

I have a 3D model of a factory where I need to insert cable trays for electrical equipement to run the cables. I uploaded the model as a coordination model over external references. Now that i want to insert the cable trays I have nothing to snap onto with my trays.

Is there a way to enable some sort of snapping or insert points onto the 3D model to enable me to inert calbe trays onto the walls and celing?
