Zooming Model Space in Viewport cannot change centerpoint

Please excuse the subject line. I could not find a succinct description of my issue. This issue just began this week. I suspect I opened a third party DWG that changed a system variable. I use the System Variable Monitor, but I did not receive any alerts.

Here's the problem. I can unlock a viewport. I can switch to model space. When I try to zoom out from here, and zoom in over there, it doesn't work.

I can only zoom straight out, and then zoom straight back in. If I hold down the CTRL or SHIFT key, I get the same result. Straight out and straight back. ???

Depending on your AutoCAD version ... would you confirm that you have installed the latest update?

Why do you suspect that? Files should not change system variables.

I do not suspect it, I know for a fact that it happens. Isn't that the whole point of the System Variable Monitor.

Is there a way to determine what update I am running?

Like I said, I opened a third party DWG and now zooming model space through a viewport has chanted.

Again, files shouldn't be changing system variables. That would not be a good thing for anyone receiving files from 3rd parties. I doubt that is what happened to you.

Yes, it happens with all files now.

I can "recenter" the ZOOM, by zooming out and then zooming to a window.

Now it is recentered to the new window.

System variables changing values happens frequently, especially PICKADD.

I like to set to 2, and it is frequently reset back to 0.

I get a notification when that happens, too.

I suspect that you have a 3rd party program or a LISP running, if you have system variables changing.

Eliminate those and do a reset.

I suggest to try working without the 3rd party program be activated. then see if any changes happened.

I do not know for a fact that I have had a System Variable change. But, it is consistent wi9th the observed behavior.

If the third-party file had loaded a program, then it would unload when I closed the program. In fact, I can shut down AutoCAD, turn off the computer, and come back the next day and still have the same problem.

The only type of change that I know of that can persist in that way is a System Variable.

If the third-party file had loaded a program, then it would unload when I closed AutoCAD. In fact, I can shut down AutoCAD, turn off the computer, and come back the next day and still have the same problem with a brand new file from a DWT file.

The only type of change that I know of that can persist in that way is a System Variable.

[EDIT] I used APPLOAD to see what was loaded, and if the Startup Suite had been modified or added to. Negative on both counts.

Once again, the file did not change a variable or load a program. That's not how it works. .dwg is a very secure file format. Forget about the file and focus on YOUR system.

@Rudy.Reavis Since I can do what you are asking for in both AutoCAD 2025-26 in all of my and outside files without issue all day long, it may be time you consider posting a full program window video of your issue so we can all observe what you see and perhaps what you might not be seeing.

Do you know how to do that? It needs to be high-res.

Trying some reverse engineering here and tried to find a way to make it zoom in and out at the center. It appears to not be possible. No system variable for it unless you are in a perspective view.

What is your UCSFOLLOW set to? It should be set to 0. This is usually for an automatic zoom extents issue, but I'm shooting in the dark for a possible solution here.

No offense, but Most system variables are stored in the DWG file.

As I pointed out earlier, that is whole point of the System Variable Monitor Window. It lets you know when the drawing you just loaded changed a System Variable. Unfortunately, it will only notify you about variables that you have configured for it to monitor for changes.

System variables are not file specific. That's why they are called "System Variables". Anything that is drawing specific is a drawing setting, not a system setting.
