Updating layout according to pointcloud

I work with pointclouds & industrial 2d layouts where we mainly try to update the building outer/inner walls & Pillars to match reality.

When working with multiple connected buildings its impossible to align the PC to the drawing, I know there could be multiple factors to why this happens but I'm trying to figure out the correct workflow (if there is any).

so I started with the building to the right (red) and aligned the PC using a wall. Moved tome pillars and inner walls but didn't have to move any outer walls. The problem is noticed later when updating the left side buildings where I would have to update the outer walls to get it to match the PC which means I would have to move all other layers in the master dwg file which is a lot.

Does anyone have any tips on the workflow here? Is it even a good idea to update 2D drawings according to point clouds instead of drawing from scratch?

Should the buildings perhaps be separated and not act as a single building?

Appreciate all tips you have regarding this type of usecase

PointCloud is the hard way to do what you wrote IMHO: you need better 3rd party tools that convert scans to plans, or go old-school as you hinted at as an alternative.

I've done it both ways. The nice thing about doing it from scratch is that you don't have to move a bunch of stuff, but the bad part is that if there is a lot of detail it takes longer. It takes a lot of time either way you do it. Redrawing also has the added benefit of not having extra content that should have moved but you forgot or overlooked it.

Have you also checked out section extraction? It may help in your efforts.

I agree, I prefer starting from scratch and having more control over the layout, problem is when customer only wants certain layers to be updated.

I have tested the extract lines but have not seen promising results, maybe I'm doing it wrong.

What I have tested is to slice the PC to view only the walls and pillars without floor and roof, it misses some walls sometimes and doesn't look reliable but might be doing it wrong

You may be able to try redrawing (at least the parts that don't match) and then doing a DWG comparison with the original. That way you can have all the old layers and only import the parts that are different. That said since it a new and not a copy (redlined Drawing) this may not do as well as hoped.
