Escape Key and Cancel Command not working

Yesterday I was cruising along as normal when all of the sudden my escape key stopped working. I believe it happened after I accidentally loaded the dbconnection manager or something similar but not sure. When I envoke a command, the escape key does nothing. When I select something and hit the escape key, it doesn't deselect everything. I know it's not my keyboard because I'm using a laptop and both the attached keyboard and the keyboard on the laptop function the same in that the escape key doesn't work. I also have a Logitech Performance MX with a button set as the escape command and that doesn't work. When I type in cancel or ^c^c, the response is "unknown command". I have searched the discussion boards and have given up and am hoping that someone knows how to fix this in a jiffy. Thanks in advance for your help.

The issue seems to be cause by PICKFIRST not being able to empty. Not sure if related but thought you may wanted to know. Worst case scenario is that you may need to reset your user settings by following TS:

I should have clarified. I did find those threads but none of them helped. I will try resetting my user profile and see if that works.

I too have this problem and it drives me crazy. I use ESCAPE, say... 40 times a minute? I saw the hotfix for Map 3D - but I don't use Map 3D!

Just a little annoyed to spend $5K on 2011 AutoCAD and Revit, hit such a workflow-killing flaw... and then lose Impression as well because its not supported on Windows 7.

I finally got mine fixed but didn't figure out what the solution is. At this point I don't know if it was a glitch with my system or with Civil 3D. I discovered that the problem existed in my mouse button assignment software (Logitech). I did a system restore but that jacked up my Civil 3D for some reason after which I uninstalled Civil 3D completely and then resinstalled it. Seems to be working fine for now. I'm worried it might happen again. Until then, I'll consider it mystery unsolved but glad it's working.

Ok, so it is happening again. Only this time I have finally figured out the culprit. For some reason, when I have Photoshop open, it renders the ESC key unusable by other programs. Apparently others have experienced this problem as well. Not sure how to fix it but at least I know that if I shut down Photoshop it will work. However, when I had the problem originally, I had performed a clean boot and it still didn't work. I can only assume that in that case, Photoshop jacked it up such that simply shutting down the program didn't fix the problem. If I find a solution I will post it but I suspect not a lot of people use Photoshop and Civil 3D at the same time.

Strange though, that I programmed F1 to be a second/identical CANCEL key, and that stops functioning as well.

Thank you for the advice. I actually found a solution a while ago subsequent to my previous solution posted. If I disable the ATI Control Center, that takes care of the problem.

I too am have issue of the esc key not work in AutoCAD 2010. Install 2012, problem continue, Now I have 2013 but issue continue on. I did not notice if esc key did not work correctly in the Revit 2010 or 2012. But, my engineering class at ITT-Tech need me to use Inventor Professional 2012 which I could not get to install but I was able to Instal Inventor Professional 2013 instead. Well, this week work on assignment I learn the esc key does not work in this program either. I do have Photoshop and I make sure it is not open when I use any of the Autodesk product. Esc key work in just able every other programs on my computer. I also have a 3Dconnexion not sure if it can be cause problem. We clean keyboard and check the keyboard but it fine. I even did that so call user profile change that was adviced once to me in AutoCAD. That did nothing. I not sure where to go or what to do to fix the problem. I wonder if it is because I have only student licence version

i have problem. Its keyboard shortkey working but whene i use PL -> enter -> (Command is not starting!!!) Text line "L" typing thene no actions and 2 time enter pressing thene using PL its work in here.pressing there is no another language and fonts.

I just wanted to let you know, you just SAVED ME! I also use the esc key AT LEAST 40 times a minute and would have NEVER figured that out. Sure enough, I was just at wits end and searched this forum for some help and became very frightened to see I had to mess with my registry?!? ...no thank you. Your Photoshop tip did the trick! 🙂 Thank you. You just made my day!!!!!

What is the ATI Control Center? I still have issue with my ESC not working on all my Autodesk Product and just recently I found out in Mircosoft PowerPoint when I am view a slideshow I cannot used the ESc to exit out of the Slideshow. I still have not found a solution that works to fix this problem. I also not no computer technician. My sister had a friend great with computer I asked him too. All he gave me for a suggestion was it could be becasue I had a free student version and not the actual full purchased busincess license one--do you know what I mean? Some one told me about the bios need changing so I still clueless.

Thank You! I was going crazy trying to deselect...I read your post and as soon as I exited Photoshop that was running in the background, the ESC button was working fine again.

Thank you guys, it was so frustrating I was getting so mad, I am using an iMAC and had the same problem with the delete and escape button not working - tried everything but thanks to the person who suggested quitting photoshop- I was actually using my illustrator cs5 - it worked thank God got to had in soon.....

It probably means keeping all cs packages unopened whilst using Autocad -

Thank you for posting this, I too was having problems with my escape key and had photoshop opened as well. After shutting photoshop down it worked like a charm. The weird thing was that I had photoshop open with AutoCAD before with no issues so I don't know why it is having issues now. Regardless thank you for saying something about this it really helped out.
