Why are you trying to convert a model to point clouds?

If you want to view your model in Recap you can import a nwd into recap. This does have the limitation of only being visible in the real view (mirror balls).

You can also use Navis to bring a point could and model together at the same time and view them there.

How can we convert a 2d/3d surface model to point clouds in AutoCAD? Also, how can we convert .dwg files to .rcp?

Hi @manharshavadlamudi_moonMBGF7

Sorry, you can’t create a point cloud from AutoCAD dwg.

However, if you have a file type in laz, las or e57, common point cloud formats, you can use AutoCAD Recap to convert (export) to rcp or rcs format. The formats known as rcp and rcs are created by Recap and are supported by AutoCAD, e.g. Civil3D, Revit and Infraworks. You can’t ‘open’ formats in las, laz or e57 in AutoCAD without first converting them to rcp/rcs format.

Point clouds are commonly created using photogrammetry or laser scanning and involve specialized software to process the points. There might be billions of points in a point cloud and each point stores data. The program you use to analyze and format the data will determine your workflow.

A program like plain vanilla AutoCad cannot create a point cloud.

May I ask, what do you think Point Clouds are and why do you think you need to do what you are asking for exactly?
