I am revising an electrical schematic created years ago by others. When I open it I am told there are missing SHX files. Whatever option I select, I end up with the electrical symbols (such as the ohm symbol) replaced by question marks. How do I figure out which SHX file to use?

This is from a drawing I know nothing about - and the resulting file selection dialog for a shape file that I know nothing about.

I don't have this shape file, but it tells me the NAME of it at least - so that I could contact the DWG author and request it.

This what I get when I click on "Specify Font ...". It's not any help. How did you get the "Select Shape File" dialog box?

I typed in "SHAPE" and it said this:

I downloaded helvbold.shx, but Autocad will not recognize it.

This is what my schematic looks like with the missing symbols:

Ahhhh.... yours is looking for a SHX "Font" file, not a SHX "shape" file.

The file it's looking for is named SUBS.SHX

You could take any font file and name it "SUBS.SHX", but if it does not contain the correct character in the proper slot, you won't be getting your (OHMS or whatever) symbol.

Re: Missing SHX files - Ohm symbol

To expand on the previous post. SHX files contain various shape numbers and their definitions.

Lets say that SUBS.SHX contains the ohms symbol and it's shape number is 139.

Now let's say you take "xxx.SHX" and rename it to SUBS.SHX.... It would still have to contain the correct shape in shape number 139 or you won't get the symbol needed. If for example, the new SUBS.SHX did not contain any shape number 139, then you'd get an error like "** Undefined shape 139" every time you regen. (More info here: http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?120463-quot-Undefined-shape-quot-but-no-missing-shape-file )

So the long and the short of it is... you need the same shape file that was used when those text entities were created.
