Hi Richard,

I confirmed with the development team that the ability to preview the background image in modelspace or paperspace viewports is not possible in the 2016 release. However, this feature is already being investigated as a future enhancement, for all of the reasons you mention.

In the meantime, you could set up a low-quality (read: quick) Render Preset that renders a region, so that you can quickly preview the background image and make the necessary adjustments. This is obviously a workaround, and hopefully we will see the feature enhanced soon.

Regarding the additional issues you're experiencing with custom HDRI illumination, the position and size of background images, and ambient occlusion control: I'll be happy to look into these further. I'd like to request some files from you for testing, so I can open you a separate case and work with you directly, if that's all right with you.
