When you enter the PEDIT command and select the shape it should prompt you with:

PEDIT Enter an option [Open Join Width...

which indicates that the shape is closed and extruding it will yield a solid.

if you see:

PEDIT Enter an option [Close Join Width...

then the shape is not a closed shape and extruding the shape will yield a surface model. At this point you can type C to close the shape.

~Lee

I'm new to AutoCAD, and I've been working on exporting my geometry into an stl file. The problem is, I can't seem to convert my work into a solid. I've drawn the outeredges- how do I "fill it in" so I can extrude the piece into a 3D solid?

I drew it using a series of arcs and lines that I connected using PEDIT. But if I go to extrude it, I can only extrude the edges, not the area it captures...which I can't export as an stl file.

It seems like a relatively simple problem, so I'd appreciate any help.

I may be worng - I guess you are working on a 2d drawing and want to convert your 2d object(s) to 3d.

If I am right, then firstly you have to learn the basic 3d in AutoCAD (i.e. extrusion, revolve...) You may use the combination of these commands for creating your 3d object.

After it is done then you may be able to export your 3d to STL format.

HTH
