AutoCAD 2016 file assosiation issue

I have had many problems with autocad 2015 upgrade to version 2016. Although there are huge topics realizing this occurrence, autodesk still has not developed a hotfix to resolve the file icon association's problem.

Autodesk says that:

But AutoCAD DWG Launcher not work?

I have R2013-2014-2015-2016 installed and AutoCAD DWG Launcher chosen to open AutoCAD and it all works fine in Win7/Win8.

So how does it not work for you? What are you expecting or wishing to do exactly?

No. I have try all the solutions that Autodesk make avaiable on network. We are a company and there area about 20 machines with AutoCAD Lt and Standard Suite installed. In some computers (a few) after reboot and lunch ACAD it solves. But in majority it has not work. I try to reassociate file properties with AutoCAD DWG Launcher but its unsuccessfully change. On file properties dialog I can browse to acad.exe and DWG Launcher, but it does not assume those exe. I try to add some code on Regedit and it works, but only on file opening with double clik. On most machines the dwg file icon does not change, continuing so annoying.

I try on windows 7 and windows 8.1

The problem is much more serious than they think. I think they should make an analysis of this question, as will as more users will install the software, more problems are reported. Believe it!

So here is how it all works, let me know if your some reason you want it to work differently:

- With DWG Launcher chosen as the default program for DWG files, Windows uses the last AutoCAD version started to open DWG files if you double-click on a file in Windows Explorer.

- If you have more than one version of AutoCAD installed, Windows will only default to the last one started, nothing else.

- If you want to open a file in AutoCADLT one moment, then another version of AutoCAD later, you must start each program first then use OPEN command.

- Double-clicking in Windows explorer will only default to Windows behavior: last AutoCAD/LT version used gets to open that file. That's what DWG Launcher does in Windows.

Most experienced users with multiple CAD installations, will do it the easy way, by o-pening the program they want to use on a specific file _first_, and then opening the draiwng.

One can shorten that, by dragging and dropping the DWG file into the desktop shortcut for the appropriate application, or, once the app is open, dragging and dropping the dwg file onto the command line.

Why do you continue to think that the most advanced user no longer do that? I am a CAD Manager. I know very well what you are refer. Thank you ... but none of this is solution.

Well to be clear, I stated 'experienced' users, which does not of necessity include advanced users. An aquaintance of mine has not-very-many years of experience, but is in all regards a much more 'advanced' user than 99% of the people running CAD or being CAD Managers.

As to why I think it's the correct answer to your issue? It works. It's easy. and an experienced person wanting to get his job done competently should always use a method that works.

Double clicking has always had, and always will have, issues when you have more than one version of AutoCAD installed. That situation breaks the one-to-one correspondence that Microsoft built into the double-click mechanism, and is compunded in Acad since the Acad.exe for various verticals is the same file and the various verticals are loaded as options. Euqally applies if there are multiple .dwg file handlers, Carlosn, Draftsight, TrueView, etc. How can MS pick correctly which you want to use at that particlar moment?

Well. I know perfectly well that the proper way to run AutoCAD is not double-click on files !!! Man...i know that!

The point I'm trying to portray has to do with the fact that after I associate files to DWG Launcher and then after have opened an ACAD session and then open a file ... etc..and everything else ... none of it works. The icons of the files * dwg are not associated with AutoCAD and neither appear with the traditional image. Even after i make the change via Registry of Windows. I have made all the upgrades in past 6 years here in my office and this is the first time that it happens...(only on 2016).

Everything you say I already know for a long time !!!Just like I did not see this issue as a simple thing. I think you are not seeing the problem. I apologize if I was not clear.

sounds like the bitmaps used for .dwg files is not correct. dwg files should be associated with AutoCAD DWG Launcher as others have stated. If you are making those changes and they are not sticking, is there a possibility you or anybody trying to do this, is not part of the administrators group or at a minimum part of the "power users" group (IRC the name correctly for that group)? Whom ever is attempting to make these changes needs the ability to write changes into the Registry. hth

what icon is being displayed?

and what do you mean by "traditional image"...

backing up a bit, what operating sytem are your running?

Might be time to post screenshots and perhaps even type a detailed descriptiion of the actual issue in your native Protugese (I'm not insulting you in any way, just trying to see if there are other ways to get you help).

Hi Paulo,

Try installing DWG TrueView 2016. We have several articles on our web site that talk about issues and errors when double-clicking a DWG file in Windows and it not opening up as expected in AutoCAD. I am not entirely sure what you are currently dealing with, but they should all boil down to the .dwg file type association not working, being misconfigured, or having registry errors or invalid access. DWG TrueView has the same file types as AutocAD, so it is a quick install to get them fixed. If it doesn't solve it, then try uninstalling TrueView. I've seen a couple cases now where instlaling and then uninstall TrueView solves the problem.

Hi @Anonymous

Are you referring to the little icon in the bottom right?

AutoCAD 2013

AutoCAD 2016

DWG Launcher

If so then you need to associate the DWG format with the application *.exe rather than DWG Launcher. Launcher as explained previously loads the last used application when users double click on dWG's in explorer. It has it's own unique Icon.

If you want the AutoCAD icon then associate it with whatever version of CAD you like but it can only be one and will always open in just that version.

Try a repair on AutoCAD 2016 see if that works. You will need to open a drawing firstly of course in 2016 to reassociate. Open AutoCAD 2016 and hopefully it rewrites the registry settings to open the last know product used for DWG format.

You could also look at turning Automatic Association back on in the registry... To Turn on automatic association in ACAD there is a registry key called DwgAlwaysAssociate in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\AutoCAD\R20.1\ACAD-F001:409\Profiles\<<UNNAMED profile="">>\General\ set it to 1.

I have try this too..no luck...but registry yes.

I was telling that this problem must should be resolved by Autodesk and no need the user to change the Windows Registry.
