I know this is an old thread, but you may be able to help. You state "I love the ribbons and I suggest that you do not give up, as your work will certainly be much more productive.". I must be missing something, because I find the ribbon a massive productivity killer. As an example, I need to draw a line between endpoints of two objects that are far apart and located in crowded areas, requiring a repeating series of Zoom Window, Zoom Window again, pick the endpoint of the first object, Zoom Previous, Zoom Previous again, Zoom Window, Zoom Window again, pick the second endpoint, finish the line, Zoom Previous, Zoom Previous again, to get back where I started. With the Classic workspace, I can float the Zoom toolbar and do all that zooming with single clicks. With the ribbon, I have to keep going back and forth between the Draw and View menus, requiring more mouse motion and more clicks. I freely admit that I have not been to training in years. Can you lead me to a source that will show me how to make the ribbon work for me instead of against me? I realize that like it or not, the ribbon is inevitable. Thanks for any help you can provide.

You read the spirit of the posting a little out of context.

For your specific ZOOM functions, Ribbon or not, and if you do not have any physical limitations, all of your ZOOM functions should be abbreviated single or two-letter typed abbreviations using one hand while you other hand stays on the mouse in the drawing space to activate those actions.
Hunting and pecking at a toolbar is just as inefficient as doing the same on the Ribbon for these basic often used functions.

And anyone at anytime can float a toolbar with the Ribbon on or off. No "classic workspace" needed unless you still like to hunt and peck for command buttons instead of speeding up with two-handed drafting in AutoCAD (again, if you do not have a physical limitation with using two hands).

HTH

A good workflow usually utilizes a number of ways to interface with the program. Ribbon, (cough) toolbars, pallets, right click contextual menus, keyboard shortcuts, mind reading, etc. Any one of them alone is inefficient. Knowing them all and having them set-up for your tasks is essential.

Dean:

Thanks for your reply. I am using COVID-19 time to catch up on a lot of learning I have been putting off for years. One of those is dealing with an embarrassing lack of current knowledge about AutoCAD, especially since I am the 'go to' guy for CAD.

As for missing the spirit of the original post, what I saw beneath the clever technique was the seductive call of continuing to resist the ribbon. My associates and I have been clinging to Classic workspace for too long.

I work in a primary metals maintenance environment where most of us who use CAD do so for only a small proportion of our time, so we never get really fluent with it. CAD is necessary but not highly valued, if you get my meaning.

I have tried the one hand on keyboard, one hand on mouse approach described. For me, having spent years teaching myself to touch type (reasonable successfully) muscle memory resists using the left hand for right hand keys. My personal assessment is that floating toolbars are just about as quick in our environment. That said, maybe I will try again.

The big win for me was learning from your reply that floating toolbars were possible in the ribbon environment. Knowing that something can be done always makes it easier to find out how. I have, and I found out a bunch of other useful things in the process.

You have improved our CAD practice, although perhaps not quite as you intended.
