ok. so i have a bit of a wierd problem. i have the trial version of autocad 2017 but i use autocad 2016 LT which is pretty limited on the 3D things it can do. so thats why i got a trial of 2017. ill make whatever i want to make 3D in 2017 and then when im done, i copyclip from 2017 and got to pasteclip in 2016 but when i do, it wants me to do something with OLE which i know nothing about. when i go from 2016 to 2016 LT, i dont have any issues with this. why dont i just use 2016 then, you may ask. well, where i work, we only have one seat so its very rare that i am able to use it. any help would be greatly appreciated.

ignoring the ethical quandary... use WBLOCK and block out what you need, and then INSERT it into you destination drawing

that doesnt work. that only registers the block for 2017 and not 2016LT. even if that worked, its not exactly the solution i was looking for. i would have to make my drawing into a block just to move it to another version of auotcad and then i would have to explode it due to certain machine requirements. any idea why it wans me to use OLE?

uhmmmm, 2017 and 2016LT use the same file format. WBLOCK writes out the selected entities to a new DWG file on the file system. INSERT places that DWG into the current active drawing that's open. And the INSERT dialog lets you check the box to explode on Insert.

Exactly what's the problem doing that?

You cannot, I repeat, cannot, copy/paste from R2017 to LT2016 and get what you want.

Since R2017 and LT2016 use the same exact DWG file format, just open the file in LT2016. If the stuff doesn't show up in LT, that's a design limit of LT. pony up the cash to upgrade to full AutoCAD.

Good luck.

im just trying to see if 2017 is worth getting. so far not so good. if it was up to me, i would gladly purchase a seat of 2017 but as i do not own the company that i work for, i cant do that. if i can get 2017 to do what i need it to do in order for the multiple machines to read what is being drawn, then im sure that my company would purchase about eight seats. pretty disappoint with the community help so far with this issue since the only solution has been to spend more money on a new version that in the end may not be compatible with anything that we do here. if you dont have any constructive solutions, then please keep them to yourself. thanks.

try to flatten the image before bringing it in.

Also if you need another seat, you need another seat. Dont let your boss cheat. Im sure he doesnt let you get extra days off by violating a contract somewhere, so dont let him steal money because he doesnt want to pay for another seat.

Trust me i realize the issues you are dealing with, but i have come to learn that if you let them do business below the cost of doing business they lose sight of the actual cost of business and when the axe starts swinging, it rarely hits the person swinging it. Ive put many years into quality systems and one fo the biggest failures of employees is to not properly communicate to their boss that they cant do their job given the current resources. They are afraid of the retribution and so the situation festers and forces you to download software and use it against the licenses intent.

thank you for understanding what i going through. i dont really want to ask for another seat yet because i havent been at this company for very long. they pretty much hired new people to do their autocad tasks so im sure they are open to the idea of growing. plus they arent used to getting things in 3D which they are a huge fan of.

i did FLATSHOT it before COPYCLIP. didnt work. any idea why it wants to use OLE?

I dont know by what method you are getting this dialog box but given previous responses it may be by design.

FLATTEN is different than FLATSHOT. (not sure itll help though)

Think of a seat as a company truck. They tell you go to to the site using their company truck and then dont provide the truck. Its real easy to see the schannagins when you make the asset a little more concrete. doing it this way is the equivalent of going to the car dealership next door and test driving a car to the work site.

also, going from R2017 to R2016 works fine aswell. so it has something to do with it being an LT version. if there isnt a solution that makes it work, then telling someone that it wont work with an LT version is better than telling someone to just spend money on something that you may not even need or want, with money that isnt even mine to spend, and especially when it wont be mine. it would belong to the company that i work for...

im not ignoring your post at all. ive responded twice to it...

if i were a betting man, i would guess that i will not be able to go from R2017 to any LT version. not really wanting to waste anymore of my time.

im not too sure what a sharade is. but if youre calling my issue a charade, then i disagree. i dont understand why i am unable to do what i need in this version when i have been able to do it in every other version of autocad since i started using it in 2004.

and as for you relentlessly suggesting that i buy R2017, as ive explained, i am unable to do that. and i dont think that i would since it seems that certain limitations have been changed with R2017. you suggesting that i should just spend money on a new seat is ridiculous. thats like someone looking for help on a forum asking how to change a water pump and you suggesting to him that he should just buy a new car. not helpful and unreasonable.

but, seeing that you have almost 2500 solutions under your belt, ill ask again, any idea why its wanting me to use OLE? if your answer is going to have anything to do with downloading a different version or spending any money, then feel free to ignore my question. no sense in wasting everyone's time with solutions, that ive already stated, are unacceptable.

i was able to get that to work. it took me a few tries as i am unfamiliar with having to do that. Being able to COPYCLIP and then PASTECLIP takes me about three seconds. using WBLOCK takes me several minutes at best. it does work but is impractical for my use. at least i know that im in a pinch, your solution will work. thank you!! 😄
