AutoCAD 2016 : Hangs/Freezes after opening/starting a new file

Hello,

Can someone advise on what process/steps one should do in order to fix the issue when AutoCAD 2016 software hangs up or freezes after opening/ starting a new drawing?

The user has no problems opening AutoCAD, but once they open a new file or starts up a new file, AutoCAD displays all the tools like it normally does during startup and stops functioning after a second and it freezes.

If someone can advise, that will be very helpful!

You'll need to provide some more info if you want a meaningful answer.

Which OS?
Is the software patched/service packed?
Does the computer meet at least minimum specs to run ACAD?
Does this happen with all DWG's or just one/some?

Please make sure that you have SP1 installed:

AutoCAD 2016 Service Pack 1

What Operating System are you using?

Are you using a particular template file (.dwt) to start the new drawings with, and is it a custom one? If so, use a different template and if it works with that one then use recover on that template or recreate the template.

I had a similar problem a few years ago and that fixed it.

The OS is Windows 10.

The AutoCAD 2016 was loaded in January and has been running fine until recently.

The opening screen locksup after opening a .dwg or a "start from scratch" file.

Answers to the questions posted (I hope):

Which OS?
- Windows 10 – 64 bit.
Is the software patched/service packed?
- Educational stand-alone.
Does the computer meet at least minimum specs to run ACAD?
- The total CPU is at 15% (ACAD is 2%) and memory is at 50% at 865mb (ACAD is at 266mb).
Does this happen with all DWG's or just one/some?
- Any file I pick locks-up to where I have to use Task Manager to end the task.
Please make sure that you have SP1 installed.
- I see this came out in September 2015. Since I loaded ACAD in 2016 can I assume it is loaded?

OK Kirk, that's great. I just wanted to be sure we were all on the same page!

First of all, since you are on Windows 10, you need to read this:

Windows 10 and .NET 4.6 support for Autodesk products

AutoCAD 2016 is supported in Windows 10 with the application of AutoCAD 2016 SP1

...and no, you cannot assume it is loaded.

You can check to see if Service Packs are installed by opening AutoCAD, and clicking on the dropdown in the upper right hand corner, just to the right of the question mark, and choosing ABOUT Autodesk AutoCAD 2016. The window that comes up should have Autodesk AutoCAD in the upper left hand corner, and on the second line should have the version number, then AutoCAD 2016 SP1 if the Service Pack is installed.

If it is not installed, go to the link above and download the Service Pack and install it.

Then reboot the system.

If you have not already done so, please make sure that Windows is completely up to date, and all Windows updates are installed.

If you are not familiar with that, let me know and I will walk you through it.

I am also curious as to why this is happening on his end, so posting this on my account would be a great resource in the future if I encounter any similar problems moving forward.

I read the Windows info.

I can get to the dropdown arrow but the screen freezes before I can get to the ABOUT Autodesk AutoCAD 2016.

I am not familiar with the Windows update check.

System requirements for AutoCAD 2016

The two main things we are looking for here are:

CPU Type

Minimum Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon™ 64 processor

Memory

For 32-bit AutoCAD 2016:

· 2 GB (3 GB recommended)

For 64-bit AutoCAD 2016:

· 4 GB (8 GB recommended)

Please remember that these are minimums, and that depending on how large or complex your drawings are, and whether they are 3D, might need to be much larger.

If you do not open an existing drawing, and just go into the new drawing option, does it still lock up?

Steve,

Thank you for helping me through this.

While loading the Service Pack a message came back saying it is up to date.

The CPU is an Intel Core i5

The RAM memory is 8 GB.

New drawings lock-up.

On the Windows update I see the same screens in the link you listed but some features like "Advanced options" and "View your update history" are not shown.

Hi Kirk;

I am happy to help.

If it shows updates available, install them. If not, you might not have permission to run updates.

So my first question is, are you logged in as an Administrator or in a profile that has Administrative rights?

Once you get Windows Update run and no more updates are available, reboot and check AutoCAD again.

If you are still experiencing this problem, check out the possible solutions below:

There are several other things that can keep AutoCAD from loading, one is a corrupt AutoCAD installation, and another is a defective Windows user profile.

To test the first, try resetting AutoCAD to defaults:

To test the second, create a new Windows user profile (preferably an Admin), logout of Windows, then log back in under the new user name and test AutoCAD from there.

Let me know how all that goes.

Steve,

I was logged in as an Administrator in Windows.

The where some articles on changing the rights to a new admin then deleating the old one.

It worked! ACAD is running well.

The old "corrupt windows profile" is a lot more common than people realize.

It happened to me on my home system about 6 months ago...I blame my kid.

It's not his fault, I just blame him.

It appears that u have deleted the TEMP folder in "C:\Users\CURRENTUSER\Temp", go there and make a new folder, name it "Temp". The problem should have be solved. It worked for me. Best of luck mate 😄
