Surface Texture Symbol

Hi, I'm trying to produce a surface texture symbol and I've found online how to make one but can't seem to find where it says to go. It gives directions as follows:

Click the Annotate tab > Symbols panel > Surface Texture.

I am on AutoCAD 2016 and I see the Annotate tab but cannot find this symbols panel or anything related to it. Please help.

I am not sure what you are really trying to do here. Can you describe or show me an example?

As far as the missing Symbols Panel, I am guessing this might be from one of the vertical products as opposed to the standard AutoCAD 2016. Mine does not have this panel either.

If you want more examples just google 'surface texture symbol' and go to images and you'll see a ton of examples

Three is no SYMBOLS panel in the Annotate Tab in plain AutoCAD: your instructions are from another variant of AutoCAD most likely. Find out or share the link if you can't tell.

Otherwise you want to draw it with Plines or find it in a custom font file or a custom SHX shape file, there is nothing in the core plain AutoCAD program to replicate your image.

So you're saying with my version of autocad that creating that symbol is not possible?

Your screenshot is plain AutoCAD. Your link refers to AutoCAD Mechanical. Two different products. Your version doesn't have all of what's in the Mech variant.

Thanks for sorting that out. So there's no way to produce that symbol unless I just manually draw it correct?

Hi kpicton,

I suggest that you create the linework and add attributes. Convert it all to a block and then you can add it to a symbol library and maybe even a menu tab or Tool Palette.

Hey there,

Thanks for following up. It was just for a school assignment, not work related but now I'm aware that I can make this symbol and save it for future use if needed. I did not do that but just drew it one time as I only needed it once. I appreciate the feedback given and the clear steps with links to describe each step.

I can't believe tha plain AutoCad does not include the Symbols panel. It should be included by default.

You are just using the wrong variant of AutoCAD: there is never going to be one installation with everything in place ready for anyone to use on a whim.

Install the correct variant of AutoCAD that you need, AutoCAD subscriptions (and STUDENT versions) give you the ability to install and use all the ones discussed above. Do so now:
