You are "close enough" for midpoint to kick in in your image IMHO: are you relying on the single pixel on your monitor to be the spacer? It doesn't work like that sadly.learn to tap F3 on your keyobard more frequently when you get this close.

I am having an issue in which my aperture seems to have no affect on the osnap distance.

I am snapping to things that are not even in the field of view (I can't even see the osnap that is being activated as it is off screen).

My aperture is set to 1 and I am snapping to the end point of a line when I am 2 inches away from it. 2 inches on my screen at the current zoom scale is way more than 1 pixel in size.

I am snapping to snaps that are NOT within the aperture box (my aperture display is turned on).

The grid shown is in 0.75 inch increments. I am almost 3 inches way from that midpoint and it will snap to it. As you can see the snap point is WAY outside the aperture box.

We are running Autocad Electrical 2014. Though this is really just an ACAD thing I am pretty sure.

Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

It's not the Osnappable location that needs to be within the Aperture box. Any object that passes through it will be checked for applicable Osnappable features, and the closest one to the cursor location will be identified [and used, if you pick]. Think about it -- if the location had to be within the Aperture box, you would virtually never be able to Osnap to the CENter of a Circle or Arc or Polyline arc segment, nor to an APParent Intersection, and you'd often be unable to Osnap to certain other things such as Block insertion points, and I'm sure there are other comparable situations.

I don't remember autocad snapping to things not in my field of view in the past.

I must be working with smaller geomtetry than I had in the past or something.

Seems like everythig I have to draw is within a mid, or an end, with only a very small window that does not activate a snap.

Autocad electrical likes to fiddle with ones snap toggle... you turn it off (F3) and then do an operation and viola... it's back on.

I had read somethings that seemed to point to the aperture being a setting to make Osnap less senstive... but aperture only works on the "magnet" setting. Which I have turned off.

Thanks for the answers!

Kent,

I did that. Found this:

http://lynn.blogs.com/lynn_allens_blog/2006/02/controlling_the.html

But it's a bit misleading or I misinterpreted what she is saying...

she speaks of the aperture and the magnet, but then says it controls how close to the object you must get for the osnap grips appear. this is not really true I don't think. I think the aperture controls how close you need to be to a snap to make your cursor just jump to that snap.

I admit, I don't understand the 'magnet' setting. on or off the behaviour of snapping is the same for me. Aperture also seems to have no affect on the behaviour of my system.

Again, thanks for the thoughts all.

F3... it's my only hope.

jedi mind tricks don't work on cad stations...

A lot of routines will toggle OSNAP settings if they fail or get unexpected results. Have you tried using the System Variables Monitor? I haven't had the opportunity to play with it very much but I think it has promise for those of us that try to figure stuff out and why it happens 🙂

Good morning darrell.l.gregg,

There are some good posts for thought here in this thread. In my experience, If you have certain OSNAPs set, regardless of whether those points are visible on the screen, as long as the Aperture is close to an entity with that condition, it will select it. I find that I usually leave Osnap off and toggle it on or use the context-sensitive shift/rt-click OSNAP menu.

... passes over an object or combination of objects that contain a feature or location to which a running object-snap mode is applicable.

Cumbersome, I agree.... I say "or combination" because, for example, with INTersection Osnap mode on, you need to have at least two objects that intersect each other passing through the Aperture box for it to "see" their intersection, though still, the intersection itself does not need to be inside the target.

i just changed my settings as below and its working for me, although annoyingly does not show the snap marker. but better than snapping to things not even close to my aperture.

marker - off

magnet - on

display - on

display - on

Cheers

yeah thats helpful kent.

the point is you don't have to span to things a mile away. but you have to sacrifice having a visible marker. unfortunately the two are tied together.
