Different layer states for different viewports & Layouts?

I want to have different layers showing on different layouts and their viewports. Is there a simple way to do this?

I read this discussion on the topic from 2012 http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-2010-2011-2012/different-layer-states-for-different-viewports/m-p/3079848

This seems very circuitous and complicated.

Is there a simple way to do this?

Hi,

you can reach for a good results by using layer manager after clicking through viewports itself (see attached image) which you can change all tabs starting with VP this will distinguish all of your Lauouts viewports with notice that your MODEL will not be changed.

SO ... click through VP then use Layer Manger to change as your need . also if you have alot of drawings you can use Layer States Manager to save all of your changes.

Thanks for the reply.

I looked at Layer Manager and see the columns (tabs) starting with VP.

What do you mean by "change" all tabs starting with VP?

What do I change? And how?

I have about 5 layouts, each with a viewport.

I created separte Layer States for each viewport.

How to work with them is extremely puzzling.

It seems that in the Model tab I have to have all layers ON.

But I am constantly getting unpredictable results.

In Layer States, what is the significance of the column for "Space". some are in Model space and some in Layout. What effect does that have? And how does a Layer State get into Model or Layout space?

And what is the significance of "Same as DWG" column?

I think I found the root of my problem. I won't be sure until I test more. Maybe someone can help clarify for me.

It seems that it matters where the layer state was created. i.e. whether it was created in the Model tab or one of the Layout tabs.

I'm guessing that this is what is shown in the "Space" column of the Layer States Manager.

NO. Did a little testing. I created a layer state in a Layout. Then switched to the model tab. It now had the same layer state as the Layout.

I changed the layer state in the Model to a layer state that says "Model" in Layer States Manager.

Then switched to the layout. It no longer had the layer state I had originally assigned to it.

I went back to Model tab and changed to all layers ON.

then went back to the Layout. Now some of the layers of the layer state for the layout show (but NOT ALL???).

This is driving me nuts.

Can anyone tell me how to get a Layout tab with a Viewport that has a layer state that is different from any of the other layout tab or model tab, and stays that way. That doesn't change when I change the layer state in the model tab??? or one of the other layouts?

You can try LVF in LAYER.vlx. Just pick up objects you want to turn off in each viewport and it freezes their layers in current viewport only.

No need to use layer states.

Main thing you should focus on is "Apply properties as viewport overrides." Is important to have this ON when you apply saved layer state on a layout.

It doeš not matter that much if you have this created in model or layout space (unless you did assign VP properties - right columns in layout layer properties dialog, which you did not).

BTW you cannot assing some specific Layer State to same specific Layout. This is just one-time thing, no other layout-NameState relationship.

Space column - is where this was originally saved (difference if you assigned VP properties).
Same as DWG - there are no VP properties, so it would be the same result no matter whether you apply this in model or layout.

I can’t believe how confused I have become about this. Here is what Layer States Manager looks like

First puzzling item:

Current layer state says “UNSAVED”

It stays that way no matter what I do. If I do a “Restore” it still says “UNSAVED”

If I do a Save, it still says “UNSAVED”

What could be going on?

This is the same in the Model tab and in all Layouts.

In 2012, Dean Saadallah had some very helpful tips about getting layer states to work:

In model space, turn ON and THAW all layers.
Have no pre-existing overrides in any viewports.
Create layer states in model space, nowhere else.
Use freeze/thaw, not on/off, for layer controls.
Double click inside a viewport that has no overrides, start LAYERSTATE, select from list, then click on restore.
Repeat in other viewports in other layouts, each with a different layer state.

The above steps worked great - all layers stayed on in model space as intended, and layouts showed their desired layer states. Then, however, I added an object on a new layer in model space. The new object appeared in all of the layouts (not what I had intended when setting up the layer states!) When I went to edit a layout layer state, the new layer was not shown in the edit layer states window. I could restore the layer state for a layout and have the new object disappear, but then the new layer also turned off in model space. The solution was as follows:

double click in a layout viewport (won't work if you merely have a layout tab active and forget to double click inside the viewport)
use the add layer button in the layer states manager edit window to add the new layer to the layer state for that layout
freeze the new layer
restore the layer state
repeat for each layout

Result: the new layer stayed on in model space as intended, but stayed off in each of the layouts with their respective layer states.
