Yes, I believe that command is the incorrect command to import KML files. From what I'm reading, it doesn't seem possible to import KML using AutoCAD alone.

AutoCAD 2017

The Client sent me two property boundary files. One in KML and the other in KMZ.

I've imported an image file of the area from Google Earth. Now I'd like to bring in the property boundaries from the Client.

I'm using the geographiclocation command to attempt KMZ/KML import, but am receiving error messages. Likely I'm using the improper command?

What kind of error messages are you receiving during the import? Is it possible to attach the files so I can try to duplicate what you are experiencing?

What what I recall, that file option of the set geographical location tool is only used to set the position of your drawing editor, as opposed to using the address / latlong options. Honestly I've never understood the AutoCAD approach to this anyway (as opposed to Map's ADESETCRDSYS which works and makes sense).

I really don't think plain AutoCAD is going to import the property boundaries contents of your KML/KMZ file anyway. Consider a request of the 60-day full working MapWorks evaluation, you will be able to import your clients files (and a lot more).

I'm using the geographiclocation command to attempt KMZ/KML import,

Unless something has changed recently, and I don't see anything new in 2017, the GeographicLocation command = "Assigns geographic location information to a drawing file." So it won't import any geometry from a KML/KMZ file.

You can use the free GIS software QGIS, import the KML (not KMZ) and export as a SHP file. You can download the software (32-bit & 64-bit) here

http://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html
