Multiline Dimension: Allow Dimline Between?

I'm working on a detail sheet and I've got two details that each has a multiline dimension --but one is masking out the dimension line and the other is not.

I need to have BOTH of them not mask the dimension line.

In the first image below, you can see that one is being masked and one is not.

Then in the next image, I've SELECTED the dimension that is masking the dim line. Notice that it appears to be one peice of text.

This is the OTHER dimension. Notice that it's displaying as two separate peices of text.

But when I look at the properties of both, i don't see any reason for them to be treated differently.

Any ideas? I'm attaching my dwg file (2016) in case anyone has a chance to take a look.

Try from (Ctrl+1) properties to check Text Overide i think your need is there.

Rather than placing a new dimension, I copied the good one from one detail to the other and got rid of the "bad" dimenion. At least I've got something I can use. BTW the \X in the text override is what makes the dimenion multi-line.

I explored the CAD file and discovered that one is a single MTEXT and the other is two MTEXT. Copying properties won't make a difference, you'll just have to recreate the dimensions.

I can see how someone arranged the style by simply exploding the dimensions and doing a comparison.

Hmmmm. After posting this, I used the grips to change the LOCATION of the dim text (the extension needs are now shorter and the dim text/line is closer to the detail) and it went back to masking the dim line.

So I've come to realize that I need to use the grips at the ENDS of the dim line to do such moves. That seems to allow me to MOVE the text and keep the mask away.

Copying and pasting isn't fixing a problem, it's masking it. 100% of questions on Autodesk forums can be masked with copy and paste.

I completely agree with that -- which is exactly why I didn't mark it as solved. I see this as a workaround to at least allow me to get the project plotted until it can be resolved.

I have yet to see anything that should be causing this. I drew the details myself and the dimensions in question were placed using DIMVERTICAL and then DDEDIT was used to override the dim values. But although I'd love to get this resolved for future knowledge (in case I should ever have to deal with this again), it's moot. It's been decided that this particular "dimension" should be shown using a leader instead of a dimension (on both details). So I've deleted it.

Never happened. I drew the details. I placed the dimensions -- they've never been exploded.

Basically, if you can replicate how someone managed to get two MText as the dimension text, you'll have your answer. I haven't finished compairing the properties of the exploded dimtext.

I've been able to reproduce the problem in a new file.

Place a dimension.
Use ddedit to change the text to inlcude a second line (to send text to the second line, type \X).
Select the dimension.
Pull the grip that is at the text to move the text location.
Now the text is seen as one item.

The thought to try that never even crossed my mind. But why did it happen in the first place? What do I do when I NEED to move the text? i.e. assume that instead of having the text where you saw it, that I had wanted it more to the right (off-center) to avoid some important part of the detail. In that case, RESET POSITION would just put it back where it was before I moved it.

I moved the text. Per my example, I moved it to be offset to the right of center. It did the same as before -- both lines of text appear as ONE MTEXT object and the dimline is masked out. I frequently need to move the dimtext like this to avoid conflicts. This seems like a bug or AT LEAST an oversight on the part of the dev team. Moving the text should just MOVE it without changing how it is displayed.

I see what you mean. When I moved it I just moved it to the left on the screen rather than slide it vertically along the dim line. I will continue to look for a better answer. Thanks for your patience.

Hi @doni49,

The text has a fill background of the same color as the background.., as @imadHabash & @john.vellek said, settin gthe dimension alignment to any default position (wright, left, middle) shows the middle line... Overriding the position by grip-editing brings the mask above the dim line, because now the line can be any where and can be striking threw the dimension text, not in between, so it seems that the default behavior in that case is to preserve the continuityof the mask over the line..

Disabling the background fill enables the line to appear in all cases..

You are correct -- it's SUPPOSED TO BE that way. There are times that the text HAS to be placed on top of other linework. In those cases the mask is used to hide the linework that it's on top of. We've already figured out WHY it's happening. Now we need to find a way to prevent it from happening. I need to leave the mask enabled while still showing the dim line. Even if they were to make it so that the dim line is ALWAYS on top of the associated dim text, that would be better than this.
