Suddenly, after all was fine last night, all items I select say they are 0., Or, if I draw a new line in 0, and go to layers list, select it, and "change" it to another layer, its properties don't change, but the working layer changes to that layer. WHAT IS GOING ON? And why do things change suddenly without apparent cause?

No, the layer is not locked. And it's the same case in the drawing into which this drawing is xrefed. Somehow every line "thinks" its layer 0. And I can't seem to change it, even by Matchrproperties.

I opened your drawing and it appears that you have objects on multiple layers. I am able to change object properties on any of them including color and layer. I am uploading a Screencast so you can see what I am seeing.

Can you describe how your experience is different or perhaps include a screencast of screen capture?

aAAaaahh.. Pickfirst!!! Thank you thank you thank you! That does it! Thanks you guys. Now, can someone tell me how the heck such things change from last night to tonight? Or is there some way to "lock" my controls so that I don't have sudden wacky changes to my preferences?

Very grateful to you both.

BRM

If there is one variable that should not be allowed to change from 1 unless the user responds to TWO confirmation dialogs, it's PICKFIRST. (and FILEDIA is right behind that.)

The new System Variable Monitor **should** have included a feature that let you "lock" a variable's value down - but we'll keep waiting...

So to answer your question, who knows? Any kind of 3rd party routine (.lsp/.dll/.arx) could change it and forget to change it back, even the built in Publish command is known to change FILEDIA and not restore it under certain conditions. Unless you know the moment it happens, it's hard to tell.

As mentioned, it could be some routine doing it to you. If you can't figure out how to prevent it or find such a routine and built the resetting into it, one thing you might at least do is to build the forcing of them to your preferred settings every time you open a drawing, by setting them in an acaddoc.lsp file. That way, they may get changed while you're working, but at least after you've closed a drawing, they will be reset when you open it again.

Pickadd changes accidentally a lot because there is an icon in the properties palette right beside the drop down menu at the top, with a + sign on it, It changes PickAdd, and it's very easy to press accidentally..

I don't know why is it in such exposed place?? I have never ever changed it deliberately in all my 15+ years using Autocad.. (except to fix it back, that is 🙂 )
