Error Message when starting AutoCAD 2017

When we start AutoCAD 2017 the following message appears 'unhandled exception c0000005 (access violation reading 0x0 ecf) address 691d03eeh' appears, on using the program the navigation bar doesn't appear and some of the function appear not to work.

We have upgraded from 2010 to 2017 so not sure on what to do

If it has never worked for you, you should probably try a reinstall first. Otherwise, you might need to explain when it stopped working. If you did a migration, you might try a reset first to remove any migration damage.

Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

You say upgraded from 2010. This makes me wonder about your typical workstation specs and operating systems.

Can you give me some details? Here is a list of requirements for AutoCAD 2017.

Next, can you verify that you running your user account as a local administrator? And next, try disabling your anti-virus and firewall and UAC temporarily.

If none of this works, I recommend that you perform a clean uninstall and reinstall while following Best Practices here.

Please post your results.

(1) Can you get the team responsible for that document to update it? It says Display Resolution "1360x768 (1600x1050 or higher recommended) " -- when on this KB article it says "Current versions of AutoCAD-based products are optimized for monitor displays with a resolution under 2000"

(2) Where does it say that you have to have local admin rights on the workstation? If OP's IT department is half way up to par, OP won't be able to disable A/V or UAC.

This is a testing step I like to take to make sure that there are no permissions issues when starting up. Here is an article that shows required permissions but in my experience, other locations might also be required.

To what versions of AutoCAD does this apply?
No mention of Windows 10?

We're getting ready to revoke local admin perms.... so I'd like to know what issues this will cause, if any.

Your statement "...but in my experience, other locations might also be required...." makes me a little nervous. This should be an exact science, the KB article you referenced _should_ outline the specifics, for each version and each O/S involved. So that troubleshooting issues such as this can be made a bit easier if nothing else.

The second article does look dated. I will search around to see if I can find anything else.

The reason I state that other locations might be required is because AutoCAD is obviously installed in an environment which it does not control. I frequently see issues with security software quarantines, font locations, customization folders and the like which can cause problems during troubleshooting if they are not truly accessible.

In addition, installation permissions differ a bit from user permissions required to operate the software. See this article as an example.
