Why do my table border colors revert to byblock when cells are deleted?

I use tables for schedules and have customized the border colors to suit our office standards.
But when I edit the table the border colors change.
Any ideas why and how to make my changes stick?

Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Can you attach a sample drawing with your table? Your example video was so small for my old eyes that I couldn't really tell what was going on 🙂

If you select the cells with the adjusted border color, rt-click and go to Locked and indicate that you want the format locked.

I just tried the format locking and it did not seem to work for me. Maybe I missed something.

As for the video, do you have a little dashed line box at the bottom right of the video to make it go full screen?

If I select those cells BEFORE deleting anything, they list as BYBLOCK. And that is also your tablestyle setting. You seem to be using manual overrides as "standards", instead of actually setting a standard in your TABLESTYLE definition.

Please look at the Screencast I prepared for you on locking the cells. Dean is correct that doing this in a table style would be a good idea if you do this frequently. If you apply these formatting changes (and lock them) to a style then you could apply the style to existing and new tables.

This has been a thorn in my side for a while now.

With your help, and with the tip from John.Vellek about locking the format I think I am in good shape.

Now I just need the best way to apply these changes to the rest of my table schedules.

Hi @Anonymous,

If you have a table set up the way you like, then use the Tablestyle command. Create a new style. In the New table style you have the option to Select table to start from. Select the table you have already made. You can then adjust other settings in the style as appropriate.

When you save your style, you can then apply it to existing tables in your drawing. If you open other drawings with tables, use Design Center to grab this style from your file where you defined it and drag it into your open drawing.

I have created a NEW TABLESTYLE as advised, and it is still not allowing me to to change the border color. Switches back to byblock.

Yes, I'm having similar problems in AutoCAD 2018,

Modify Table Style -> Borders tab

Data or Header or Title

Borders tab

Lineweight/Linetype/Color change from ByBlock to ByLayer

once I close the dialog and reopen, reverts back to ByBlock

I too am having this problem. I've created a table style from scratch and applied it to a table but the cell style borders keep switching to by block instead of maintaining the settings I have set up in the tablestyles.

I guess this is just a forever bug? Still a problem in 2025, using ACAD 2023.

Not really, it boils down to how different are your actual TABLESTYLE settings from what you "lost": if you think yours is different, please share a DWG file with your table in it, explain how we can replicate the issue.

Here is a table that is exhibiting that behavior. Try changing borders to anything but ByBlock and they revert back to ByBlock.

I have another table (not attached) that I created some time ago, before this behavior began on my machine, where the borders are set to white. If I try to set them to anything other than white, they revert to white.

Do you mean like this? I added color to the one TABLESTYLE for easier visibility

FYI the single TABLE in your shared DWG file has a color-9 override, aka forced. Perhaps that is the only issue.

Pendean does not change your tablestyle border colors, right.

Your problem is, you doesn't read the Help[F1]

You need to set the color and now, you have to tell Acad what border you want to have in this color,

you have to choose one of the seven options (the 8. is NO borderline)

Color

Sets the color to be applied to the borders you specify by clicking a border button. Choose Select Color to display the Select Color dialog box.

Do the following:

Open the drawing
Type TS
Make sure you've selected the CIDA-struct table style
Choose "Modify..."
On the right side, just under "Cell styles," choose the Borders tab
Change the Color to anything other than ByBlock
Click OK
Click Modify...
check the Borders tab - does everything say "ByBlock" still?

If you can see anything other than "ByBlock" then it's my computer that's at fault.

Never mind, apparently "OK" does nothing unless you click one of the box pictures underneath to choose which lines to change. Sorry! Thanks for your help!
