Autocad keeps freezing up after switching to Ortho snap mode

I'm asking for one of our team members,

but this problem just started happening recently. She has autocad 2017.
Whenever she switches to Ortho snap mode ( using the f8 shortcut) from osnap

her autocad just freezes, but she get's it back up and running again automatically when she pulls up the task manager and then closes it.

We can deal with it, but it's just really annoying. We're not sure if it's an issue with her computer or the program. I couldn't find anything to fix this problem online so any advice would help.

So turning on Ortho locks up AutoCAD?
What if she enables Orthomode by some other means than pressing F8?
Trying typing in ORTHOMODE and setting it to 1.
Does it behave the same?

Windows 10 with the Anniversary update installed by chance? It's a known problem, no fix yet, the update needs to be removed. If R2017 is still hosed you will need to remove .NET from the system, install .NET3.5 then install the latest .NET back on the PC.

Make an effort to delay/put off WIndows10 updates moving forward: Microsoft issues these out BEFORE they consult with the software and hardware vendors so everyone is playing catch-up at the moment.

A workaround that worked for me is setting Ortho to F4 in CUI Keyboard Shortcuts editor and then hit apply. (F8 will still work for Ortho, but now won't freeze the cursor anymore). Weird huh! Hopefully Autodesk will fix this problem soon. I've been waiting since last year for this fix. Crazy that we have to use workarounds to fix Autodesk issues instead of it working off the bat. It seems with every release, more and more things break. Time to slim down the program and make it simple.

HI,

how i change the keyboard shorcut to change ortho mode to F4? I trying but doesn't work. (see picture below)

When I'm trying to use Orthomode(F8) my Autocad freeze.

You need to set TEMPOVERRIDES to 0 (that's a zero): the problem is with the latest Win10 Anniversary Update, it's not as simple as making F4 beccome F8.

I am running the the latest build of Windows 10 on my main work PC (14926) and it doesn't have the problem (also applied all Hotfixes on that PC as well, so that could have solved it). If you're on the release build of Anniversary, then I'd recommend updating Windows to the latest build (though that will have to be done using the Insider Preview program (you can revert to a release build at anytime if you have a restore point created). I stumbled across the swapping F4 as F8 solution to the freezing problem when I was troubleshooting my old boss's computer. He was running AutoCAD 2017 on the release build of Anniversary update so I thought the shortcut override in CUI would be a good workaround (which it ended up being an excellent workaround for this freezing issue).

I wouldn't recommend this if you aren't familiar with preview releases or dislike bugs (which usually are minor and workarounds come out pretty quickly). You do have to be on top of your googling / binging game though to figure out the solutions to these bugs.

I got a new computer here at work just yesterday and I now have this issue for the first time.

An oddity that I discovered: If I move the cursor to the taskbar and go into another program then back to Acad that will release Acad and I can then continue my work. That's not ideal, of course. It kills momentum and time. Plus, I have to do it all over again the next time I hit F8 for Ortho.

Ctrl+L is also a default keyboard shortcut, but I reprogrammed F1 to be Ortho as I already have F4 programmed for something else and I rarely use Help.

We are currently using 2015 C3D, btw.

Just wanted to add:

The update itself does not cause this problem.

Ive been using it since release without problem.

Today, I wanted to mess around with Cortana's reminders, so I had to sign in with a microsoft account to do so.

And after that very action, issues started with f8 ortho toggle.
