Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

AutoCAD 2017 should allow you tot save all the way back to a R12 DXF format.

If you need to test it, I suggest downloading the Free Trial version to give it a try. This is a fully functional application that will expire after 30 days.

I haven't bought Autocad in a while and we've been running an old version, but are looking to upgrade to the 2017 version. Now I am using the free trial at the moment and was wondering, is it possible to save files as an R14 DXF file on the PAID 2017 version? Thanks in advanced for the help

R14DXF (circa the year 1997) was skipped a very very long time ago: your option is R12DXF only to go that far back in time.

R14 can easily open R12DXF files.

Note the following: any new feature or command or ability in R2017 that has never EVER existed in R14 will not ever show up in R14 no matter how hard to save back down that far.
