I've been using 2017 since it was released and this has been an absolutely consistent frustrating bug. I have re-installed AutoCAD six times and it makes no difference. Whenever I open a dwg that has a PDF or image reference loaded, it will always crash while opening the file.

It doesn't matter if I attached the PDF or JPG last time I worked on the file (in 2017) or if someone else attached it in an older version of AutoCAD. My 2017 will always crash opening the file. The other people I work with have no problems opening the same files with older versions of AutoCAD (2016-2010), and I have to ask one of them to go into the file to unload the PDF/JPG so that I can open the dwg. This is clearly a persistent 2017 bug that I have filed countless crash reports on, but Autodesk has never responded to any of them.

The unhelpful crash message is:
"AutoCAD Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I really don't want to have to uninstall AutoCAD again and install 2016 instead.

I use AutoCAD 2017 in Windows 10 Home on a Lenovo Yoga 3 14 with Intel Core i5 2.2ghz, 8Gb RAM, and a 250 GB solid state HD with 80GB free space. I usually use it dual-screen with an HDMI Samsung S24D360, but the problem happens regardless of whether the second screen is connected.

Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I've tried it both ways without success... I currently have all the patches and updates installed, and in previous re-installs I tested it before applying the updates and it happens no matter what.
Stefanie

use RECOVER command to open these files, do they still crash or fail to open?

If yes, start GRAPHICSCONFIG command and turn off LINESMOOTHING< LINEFADING and if needed almost everything else on that pop-up until your system stops crashing to see if that helps.

FWIW I have the same exact laptop, Win10 update from Win8.1, and R2017 and I;m not seeing this issue.

Hi @schurthing,

Reinstalling won't necessarily fix such problems. I suspect that this is related to your graphics card driver.

Please give me your exact AutoCAD version (type ABOUT at the command line), your OS, your graphics card model, your Graphics Card Driver.

I assume that you are running as a local Administrator on your laptop. Do you have any add-ins installed in AutoCAD or any customizations?

You can try creating a new user account (admin) and log onto AutoCAD (no customizations or add-ins) to see if the problem persists.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

@ennujozlagam - Thank you. No one else is using a Lenovo laptop--everyone's laptops are different. I tried again this morning to start with a clean new dwg and immediately attach a pdf underlay. It crashes immediately every time. I've tried PDFs of raster images created by other apps, and PDFs created by AutoCAD from dwg files that have no rasters in them--everything with a PDF causes AutoCAD to immediately crash.

I have also tried Recover a few times, but it reports no errors and doesn't fix the problem.

@pendean - Thank you for the suggestion. I just tried a few different options in GRAPHICSCONFIG as you suggested, and also tried turning off hardware acceleration, but nothing helped.

I should also clarify that AutoCAD will immediately crash when I try to insert a PDF underlay, I never get the chance to insert it, save it, and re-open it, as I may have suggested in my original post. I have been able to insert raster images, save the dwg and re-open it. It is really just the PDF files causing the problem.
