I am sorry that you are having problems saving the datalink in your template file. Can you attach a sample drawing and excel file so i can duplicate this? This will help to determine if it is something in the files, application, or in your environment.

External Refernce File Type

I have drawing that is a template and contains a table that is linked to an Excel file. Using the template for a new drawing by way of saving as, the link is broken if the Excel file has been moved or changed. To update the link you can either go to the External Reference Palette or using the Data Link dialog box. If you use the External Reference Palette and change the Excel file link, the dialog box filters the file types to *.xls or *.i (not sure what of file this is). I know the Excel file can be converted, the full file path can be entered in dialog box for the Excel file, but these are extra steps that shouldn't be iterated over many files. If the Data Link dialog process is used, the file is able to be selected (*.xlsx) but the file freezes upon updating the table link.

It is safe to say that this is a bug since I have installed AutoCAD 2017 and the External Palette process works as it should. Also, this is not just one computer as two other computers in my office have the same problem.

Is there a fix for this besides the work around I found?
