topic Inserting a table into MText in AutoCAD Forum

Does anyone know if it's possible to insert a table into MText? I have my general notes that need several tables as part of them, and depending on the project I add or remove quite a bit of content. Every time I do that I have to resize and move my tables which gets very irritating. I also thought about adding the table in as a block, but I couldn't make that work either. Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

I am not quite sure what you are trying to do here. Is it possible to attach a sample file so I can possibly make some suggestions for you?

Here is a file that includes some of my basic general notes. As you can see I've replaced some chunks of information with tables, but there are still several areas the I would like to replace with more tables. The problem is if I have to adjust the column width it messes up the appearance of some areas (like under the foundation section where it looks like the text was tabbed over). I'm not sure if I made that very clear, but hopefully it's enough for you to go on.

Hi @Anonymous,

I definitely see what you are trying to accomplish.

Embedding a table in this fashion isn't possible. I would also suggest that having all your notes in a single MTEXT object is a bit unwieldy. I usually break mine up by category or at least by column. That way I don't have to keep adjusting locations and wrapping as notes get added or deleted. Just my two cents 🙂

I am actually wishing for a text wrap-around feature for tables so you could place it and text word move around it instead of through it.

Your post confirmed what I was worried about; that it wasn't possible. I am considering the best way to proceed at this point. I've thought about making each section into it's own block with its own individual columns to help with those indents. I've also thought about making each section into a table with invisible borders; that would allow me to add or remove them as needed. I had to take a break on fixing that issue for a while to work on something else, but if I come up with a good solution I'll be sure to post it here.

Did you ever find a solution to incorporate tables into your Mtext. It seems this is still not possible from the testing I did today. Seems pretty lame that this simple text and table editor can't be achieved.

Hi,

Have you tried looking at this the other way around?

I mean large cells containing MText without borders, then sections containing borders when you need them.

This would appear to be MText with tables, but in reality it is just 1 large table.

You would have to play around with the number of columns and merging to acheive the desired result but I think this could work.

I have attached a sample containing the first 2 columns of your sample mtext/table.

I have used this method myself on a much smaller scale.

Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Craig,

That was not a method I have considered. I did a couple of quick tests and I think I can make that work. How much flexibility I can get with the tables will probably determine the success but it looks promising. It will be time consuming but once done it should be pretty robust.

As I said my use was on a much smaller scale, but I still had something like 20 columns.

It was a case of using many narrower columns and lots of merging to achieve the appearance required.

I would be interested to see how you get on.

cheers
