WHY ARE NEW LAYER, DELETE LAYER AND OTHERS ON THAT ROW DIMMED OUT?

Anyone, can you tell me why my layers icons are not showing yet are there but appear to be hidden? Anyone know?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

If it is your ribbon icons that are not showing, do you by chance have a contextual tab open?

Could you provide further context so that we may have a better idea of what is going on? perhaps a screen shot would help.

I shut down AC 2017 and reopened it again, this seemed to resolve the Layers issue however, I still do not have a LAYOUT TAB displaying on the RIBBON. Any suggestions how I go about displaying this tab with the others please. Thanks again!

I am pretty new to AutoCAD... However, I did go into Options, Selection,
Ribbon Options and reduced the value from 2500 to 1....

I'm not sure if that's the right or wrong thing to do. Any more
advise/suggestions would be great. 🙂

That does not mean it's compatible with AutoCAD.

E.g. using an Intel graphic card sometimes makes icons hidden in the layer-manager, independent of old or new graphic card.

Have you read in the help what that setting mean?

Setting it to 1 is a very unusual value, let it be 2500 or set it to 0 (and before please read about the meaning of that setting!)

To your basic question: can you please show a screenshot from which icons you are speaking about, first I thought you mean the layer manager, then you come up with a ribbon setting, ... not sure now where you are and which icons are greyed out now.

Hello Alfred,
Initially I had two issues. One was the layer icons where no showing on the
ribbon, this is now resolved! The second and remaining issue is I do not
have a LAYOUT TAB displayed on my ribbon.

With regards to reducing the value, I took this advise from someone at the
AutoDesk! I am very new to AutoCAD 2017 and evidently do not have the
knowledge or experience you do. In which case going back to the value of
the contextual tab setting from 2500 to 1 and in response to your comment.
No, I do not know what it means, nor in many instances do I know what I am
doing.... hence seeking help!

It's easier for future readers to find answers when threads are only handling one issue and not mixed ones.

Please show us a screenshot so we can see what you see, which tab in the ribbons is active, ...

In that case you have a help built in, look into the help what the value means and what will be the result when you change the value.

That's the best way to learn, much better than just change a setting without knowing what will happen then.

When you have the dialog open you can see (in the options dialog) in many settings the system variable name that is changed, you can then press <F1> to see the help about the dialog or you can use the help (or Google) to search about the system variable name.

Let me clarify. When you move from MODEL TAB TO LAYOUT TAB, on the ribbon
above there appears a LAYOUT TAB... It was there earlier today and now it's
gone. How do I get it back. That's all I want to know.

if you are trying to add it to your ribbon rigth click on an empty space in your ribbom and you can get this menu:

I believe thats a contextual tab. You have to be in paper space to have that show up.

First make sure that you are in paper space and not in a viewport's modelspace.

If you are in paperspace and the tab "Layout" does not appear, then look to the section in the help for customization, which describes the contextual ribbon tab's, how to add and how to remove them >>>here/click<<<.

I'm afraid that this is a bit complicated at the beginning, so I would suggest, as the layout tab should be displayed by default, that you reset your menu to default. So you get all your workspaces reset as like AutoCAD was new installed.

Start command _CUI, you should see the topmost item "ACAD" in the upper left corner of the dialog, right click it and use option "Reset ACAD.CUIX". Close the dialog and restart AutoCAD.

Will I loose all my pre-settings if I do this? If I do loose them I don't
know how to redo the settings. Is there a manual for this somewhere?

Which settings have you done? If you have changed any workspace/menu settings, then yes, my suggestion would reset the workspaces/menu to the default.

Please don't misunderstand my words, but if you modify program settings and you don't know how (in case you have to reinstall the software or in case the software crashed you should always know what changes you do and how to redo them.

Did you miss my link in my previous post, which points to the help ==> how to customize contextual ribbon tabs?
