Slow zoom/pan

CPU: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2603 v3 @ 1.60GHz (12CPUs), ~1.6GHz

Memory: 32GB RAM

Video: Quadro K2200, 4GB dedicated RAM

Model: PrecisionT7910

OS: Windows 7 Professional

AutoCAD Version: 2017

I have a drawing that is ~3.42 MB with 5 XREFS that range from 400kb to 3.5MB. When I use the mouse wheel to pan the camera or zoom in to the drawing it gets very choppy/laggy. I cannot post the drawings themselves, but I will post things I've tried as I do them. Any tips/input is appreciated.

Hi,

General: 12CPU kernels don't help you, AutoCAD uses only one (for most of the jobs), but only 1.6GHz is quite slow.

Tips:

make sure all service-packs and updates are installed for your AutoCAD
Start command _GRAPHICSCONFIG, show us the screenshot ... and in the same dialog turn off hardware acceleration
If the drawings are 2D then make sure you use the visual style "2D Wireframe"

Does any of the suggestions change the performance on your system?

Are there lots of PDFs, Images, Hatches in the drawings? Can you zip the drawings and send them to me directly at john.vellek@autodesk.com?

Here are the graphics configs. It was turned on when I checked. I turned it off and it seemed to have smoothed it a bit. I will need to run it by another person before I can say it's 100% fixed. Still trying to get it even smoother.

I will have to get permission before I can do something like that with the files. I don't think I am able to, but I will ask.

There are no PDFs or images. I do not see any hatches.

I changed the visual style to 2dwireframe using VSCURRENT command. Re-opened the drawing and did not observe noticeable improvement. I have verified I have the latest SPs and updates.

If you first change the visual style and then open the drawing, then the visual style is reset to the setting stored within the drawing.

Just open the drawing, change the visual style and then do your tests.

Can you show a screenshot of the command/dialog _ABOUT?

Are your drawings 2D or 3D (or mixed)? ...including XRef's

Try to run command _RECOVERALL with that drawing and XRefs to see if there are any defects in the drawing's database.

Does that performance issue only happen in that dataset or any other drawings too?

Are the drawings saved in the current DWG-format or an older one?

Here is the _ABOUT and the open & save options.

The drawings appear to be a mix of 2D and 3D

After running the _RECOVERALL it says it fixed 1 error. No noticeable performance improvement. The issue happens in all drawings besides empty ones. Please let me know what else you might need me to try.

Hi @Anonymous,

You might try downloading and installing the most current graphics driver from here to see if it helps.

In addition, you might try logging in as a new user with local administrator permissions to see if there is any performance difference.

Is this problem happening only on your one computer or throughout your office?

I've updated again to ensure I have the SP now. I am still having the issue unfortunately.

I'm out of ideas, have you tried to load the file and the referenced dwg-files to the local harddisk, then disconnect the workstation from network and try all again?

It's hard now to go deeper into AutoCAD or workstation configuration as we don't have the data, and so we are not sure if your feeling about "slow" is slow in terms of "yes, unusual slow for us too" or it's a personal point of view that you think it's slow while others see that performance as ok.

Yes the slower processor speed might be the problem. I would really like to see your drawing files to make sure that they aren't the real issue.

Whenever people in my office start complaining about performance issues, I usually send this check list:

(note: Try each idea one at a time so you can identify the specific culprit)

1. Turn the Layer Palette OFF. Use either the command CLASSICLAYER or set LAYERDLGMODE to 0
2. Turn Dynamic UCS OFF
3. Purge REGAPPS (command: -PURGE, R, etc) or (download the CleanupRegapp.exe routine from Autodesk)
4. Delete and/or restore Scale Lists (download the CleanupScales.exe routine from Autodesk)
5. Delete Layer Filters
6. Set you Anti-Virus program to ignore AutoCAD related extension files like: DWG, DWT, LSP, ARX, DCL, etc
7. Turn OFF Selection Preview (Options-> Selection Tab-> UN-check Selection Preview check-boxes)
8. Turn OFF Palette Transparency
9. Turn OFF SelectionCycling, (SELECTIONCYCLING = 0, or SC button at bottom of screen)
10. Turn OFF Hardware Acceleration within AutoCAD, (icon on the lower right near workspace and toolbar lock
11. Set HPDLGMODE to 1 and HPQUICKPREVIEW to OFF
12. Change ROLLOVERTIPS to 0
13. Set QPMODE to 0
14. If using two monitors, set monitor 1 as your graphics monitor.

That's where I'd start. If you guys regularly run into large files or large coordinates far from the origin you might wish to upgrade hardware. Our MINIMUM machine is 3.6GHz 16.0GB RAM.

The second processor doesn't help AutoCAD much:

From the help desk:

AutoCAD only supports multi-core technology in specific areas of the product, including:

2D regeneration
MentalRay rendering

To fully benefit from multi-core processors, you need to use multi-threaded software; AutoCAD is predominantly a single-threaded application.
