Very Big File + The Area Command's result is incorret

Hello,

First, I have heavy files, I dunno why. They are simple drawings with no 3d or anything (AutoCad 2013)

I tried:

- Purge

- Overkill

- Wblock

and it didn't work .

I downloaded AutoCAD DGN Hotfix for AutoCAD 2013/2014 and DXFOUT the full file - Purge all then saved the file as DWG again. (This is the only thing that worked, but it is a long process to do for all the files and still the file is not small as I wish)

--- is there a way to avoid this in the future? something to do to clean up bit by bit?

Second, The area Command in a certain file is giving me wrong results! when I calculate it Width by height the result is different.

Hi,

show us a drawing which has a file-size you think is too big and with a polyline that shows an incorrect area.

Generally: make sure you have installed the latest service packs for your AutoCAD (run command _ABOUT and show us the screenshot from that dialog)

As you can the see the area gives me around 15m2. Although the height is around 9m and the width is around 4m!

Hi,

first idea: you are using command _MEASUREGEOM in paperspace? If so, that's incorrect. You have to be in modelspace to get the values of the model, otherwise you get a scaled value as a result, depending on the viewport scale.

But as I'm not sure...

Do you mean the read polyline? If so that is my result, tested with AutoCAD 2017 and AutoCAD 2014:

If you mean anything else then let me know which entity you have selected, best would be to show a screenshot about what you have selected so we can reproduce this.

Also let us know what service pack is installed (command _ABOUT).

I am somehow a beginner ... I am not used with all the details.

So, please Let me get it.

is there a difference between "_measuregeom" and "measuregeom"?
I click the drop-down menu of "measure" and I choose "area".

because yes this is the usual command I use to measure area. and this is the first time it gives wrong result.

what is the difference between modelspace and paperspace? why this time in specific the command gives me wrong result?

side information: this is a file I received and am studying it. I can't edit in the whole drawing, may be it is like a block? I mean when I click anywhere on the drawing all the lines get selected. does this make any difference in our area error?

- attached the exact area I am measuring and the about result.

This is not the heavy file. I have files 28 000Kb, when they should be ranging 500-1000kb.

I didn't send the heavy file yet, until we solve the area issue. to take it one by one 🙂

The command with underscore can be used in all languages of AutoCAD the one without underline can only be used in English AutoCAD versions.

But both are doing the same.

In modelspace you have access to the model itself, in paperspace you only have access to the objectsnap-points of the model, but the points are measured in paper coordinates. So if you have a viewport with a scale setting of 1:10 so the distances between such points measured in paperspace are scaled by 0.1 compared to model.

Yep, the model itself is one big block-insertion in modelspace, you can use command _EXPLODE to get it's single entites.

When you have a block in the modelspace you can't access the lines directly.

Well, without having access to the file and it's contents I can't say if 28MB is a valid value for the file-size or not.

To make sure I understood well ... I get wrong area result because the drawing was scaled and am in the paperspace not the modelspace.

Okay... is there a way to measure area while being in the paperspace? or is there a way to go from paperspace to modelspace to get the real area?

I need the measure the real areas.

No, I did not mean that the drawing was scaled. What I meant was that the viewport in the layout can present the model in a plotable scale ... that does not mean that the model is scaled.

As long as you want to get the area of a model and not the area this model will need to be presented on the paper, then no, you can't do that in paperspace.

Either change to tab "Model" or do a double click in the viewport to enter the modelspace.

Running command _PURGE with all options (including orphaned data) reduced the drawing to 500kB

Only if you want the wrong answers all the time.

First day with AutoCAD? Or are you just lost in paper/model space concepts?
You can double-click inside a viewport to be in modelspace, or you can click on the MODEL tab at the bottom of your AutoCAD screen (it's always at the far left) to be in modelspace.

As noted by others, the only reason your file is so big is because you've never purged it: it's full of unused clutter. it's really not that big at all.

Sir ... It seems I have to read about what exactly the word "layout" and "viewport" and "plotable scale" means. To have a concrete understanding.

I don't know about the paperspace and the modelspace so I will read about this too.

I changed to tab model and yes the area command works great :)!

I dunno how to do this but its okay.

I tried the purge command on this file and as I mentioned before I tried it alot on other files, it reduced this file from 28 000kb to 15 000kb only.

I don't have (including orphaned data) option. It is AutoCad2013.

defoux the file then purge then save as dwg.
