Hello,

I’m trying to import some FBX files (like this sample attached) to AutoCad 2017 and I can’t get the textures. This FBX file originally was an OBJ file created in another software then I decimated it with Remake and then exported to AutoCad FBX format. I guess that the textures are embedded into this file.

Remake / AutoCad

AutoCAD

So, when I import in AutoCad I can see it find 1 material (image bellow) but It is shown grayed. I tried to change view properties to conceptual, realistic, but I got no results. I also tried to find the material at materials list with no results.

Why am I doing wrong? Is it possible to see FBX textures in AutoCad. If it is not possible what file format should be able to do it?

Thanks,

Hi @Anonymous,

The FBX file should bring in materials as described in this article. I just talked with my 3DS Max expert. We looked at your file and while it had Materials mapped, he suggested that since the Textures are stored externally that since they don't appear to be present, then perhaps AutoCAD won't even really bring in the materials. Do you have access to the original files?

I've just imported my FBX into cheetah 3d. making sure it had NO other surfaces or jpgs in same folder. perfectly can see surfaces.

Can NOT see surfaces in fusion 360 (don't care)

and cannot upload to a360 viewer, perhaps its the cloud services problem above.

but yes Cheetah 3d. no other surfaces attached or included. and fbx has surface.

My computer went belly up this AM so I dont have access to much. My 3DS Max guy, @Alfred.DeFlaminis was able to get the Texture file from the FBX file. Perhaps remapping it in AutoCAD will do the trick.

He also found some strangely averaged Normals in the file and has corrected them. He indicates that 2 textures are missing as well: normal and displacement map.

Perhaps if I could get access to the original OBJ file it would tell us more.

I am not aware of any method to remap these materials in AutoCAD. If you open the Materials browser on the imported file, it shows only the one Global material. I think that to examine this more carefully it would be helpful to see the OBJ file. I am guessing that from 3DS Max the file could be opened, checked for integrity and then exported more cleanly for import into AutoCAD.

Hello @Anonymous,

If you want you can rename it to .zip and I'll rename it again. Or what I do in a lot of cases is put everything in a folder and make a zip out of the folder. Either way I'm flexible.

The thing is though that .obj's don't contain the texture information, so there are no maps to extract. FBX's can contain it however. But I can take the obj and apply the map if you'd like and export as FBX. Is that what you're looking for here? Thanks!

Best Regards,

Hello @Anonymous,

Sure no problem. I have imported the .obj, embedded the texture, and re-exported as FBX for you. This obj was 1M polygons which might be heavy for AutoCAD but I've exported as FBX anyways. 🙂 I compressed as .zip using 7zip.

For some reason it's a much bigger file as an FBX, possibly because of the texture being embedded. I reimported it as a test in 3ds Max to make sure the texture stuck and was tiling properly and it was. Getting it into AutoCAD with proper tiling is a bit outside of my area, so John will take it from here. Thanks so much!

Best Regards,
