Export custom setting for AutoCAD

I am trying to export my custom AutoCAD settings. Not AutoCAD Mechanical or Electrical. For Electrical and Mechanical there is a folder in my start menu and a tool called Migrate custom settings. Will that work for plan old AutoCAD? Since there is a separate option for AutoCAD E and M, I thought I would see one just for plain AutoCAD.

Unfortunately it does not. That article states go to:

Start > All Programs > Autodesk > AutoCAD 20xx > Migrate Custom Settings > Migrate From a Previous Release

But, I do not have AudoCAD 20XX

I have

AutoCAD Electrical 2016...

AutoCAD Mechancial 2016...

AutoCAD Raster Design...

XX is a variable designation so XX could be 14 or 16 etc.

or is the problem that you are trying to export Vanilla settings and the only option is to export electrical?

Exactly. I need vanilla (I called it plain) AutoCAD settings to be exported.

do you have the ability to test and see if a electrical export would also export the vanilla setting?

Ive got a similar set up here. Ive got electrical installed and with it came a vanilla version and i dont see a location to do just vanilla either. Unfortunately ive only got one work station at my disposal.

I did it with the AutoCAD mechanical and the setting did not migrate. I think I may just use Mechanical from now on.

I think the migration is only going to do the vertical settings. What have you customized in plain AutoCAD that you want to move?

I would like toolbars, ribbon customizations, color schemes, file locations and ortho, object snap settings and grid size defaults to migrate.

Hi @Anonymous,

Since I don't work on any specific verticals i am not sure which specific settings they migrate.

I do suggest that you consider creating a partial menu to house your customizations so it is portable between workstations and versions.

How many workstations are you trying to migrate?

If only one or two,and the normal migration doesn't work, I suggest that you open a Notepad File to paste in the file paths if they are complicated.

I will dig a bit further to see i can get more information on why the migration isn't working for you.

[EDIT] Here is an article I found on migrating Mechanical - perhaps it is applicable. Please review and let me know what you think.

I have no idea what you are talking about when you say '...specific verticals...'.

I am not sure how to correctly create a partial menu that would house any of these types of customization. Any resource I can use to find out about them?

This is all based on one workstation. Our IT group switched domain's and because of that, new user accounts had to be established. They did not port any of the software customization and we have been holding off on others until we figure something out. 5 more workstations to go.

The file locations were not to bad to do, it was everything else that takes time.

AutoCAD Electrical 2016...

Check out this YouTube video on creating partial menus. I think that you will find containing your customizations in your own menu file will be really helpful for you over the long run.

Are you actually have installed and are using plain AutoCAD?
Or are you running one or both of your verticals "as autocad"?

Honestly, I am not sure I fully understand what a vertical is, so I cannot answer.

When I run AutoCAD the splash screen shows up as AutoCAD. When I run mechanical, the splash screen shows mechanical and when I run electrical, the splash screen shows electrical.

Does that answer your question?

Not really, and I suspect this may be why you can't do what you want.

Do you have plain AutoCAD installed? Not the splashscreen, Not Electrical, Not Mechanical, but the actual AutoCAD program? Like this, from Windows program lanucher it says nothing else but AutoCAD and the year version, no extra words

Note: Electrical and Mechanical variants of AutoCAD are called VERTICALS: they are not plain-AutoCAD, but they can be run "as AutoCAD" without their extra features being present.

I may not have plain autocad installed. I cannot upload screen shots (OE I am sure), but in my autodesk mechanical folder, there is an option to run autocad vanilla. When I do that, the splash screen only says auotocad 2016

Correct, you are just running MECHANiCAL in a profile-option offered called "run as autocad" where it unloads the MECH menu items, loads a provided "autocad" menu and it pretends to be AutoCAD. In reality it's not and you can easily invoke MECH commands in it not find in plain AutoCAD that the rest of us use.

AutoCAD ARCHITECTURE, the 'vertical' I use, isn't shy about telling me it is doing that, see screenshot:

AutoCAD Electrical offers the same feature, as do all the other verticals that are based on AutoCAD.
