Users do not have rights to install or modify set ups.

Nothing new. All machines installed and set up at the same time about a month or 2 ago.

It is an intermittent issue, it does not happen all the time.

AutoCAD 2017 - MTEXT Ribbon Gets Big

I have borrowed this old post as it seems to still be an issue without a solution that I can find.

Help would be appreciated. See the attached file.

AutoCAD 2017 SP1

Sometimes when editing MText, my ribbon gets HUGE and takes up half the screen. I've fixed this before by closing and re-opening AutoCAD. And, of course, it doesn't always do it. It looks like it's stretching the ribbon to show all my text styles. Is there some setting that needs to be selected or is this a glitch?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Someone may have edited your cui. The problem appears to be your numerous text styles. In the CUI, Select the Ribbon -> Tabs. Expand the Text Editor Contextual Tab. Then select the Multiline Text Editor - Style row. Under the properties panel, change "never collapse" to "Collapse as needed". This is just a guess that someone changed it to never collapse. See picture.

Thanks for the reply.

That is not an issue. Both machines I have seen this happen on are set properly in the CUI.

Undocumented Feature maybe?

Your screenshot is from R2010. It's not a feature there. Windows 10 by chance?

It's not a feature of R2017 either 🙂

This only happens with MTEXT's Ribbon action? No other Ribbon action?
Is today the day you all installed R2010? or Sp1? Or is this a sudden new problem that just appeared? R2010 is not new, so what is different in this 8-year-old software today?
This happens to all PCs? You said two, is that all of them?

By chance did these two (or more) users share an action together, like they both got an add-on or a custom menu or they both did something else together? Or both get Win8/8.1/10 together?

>>>...It is an intermittent issue...<<<
There is no cure for random glitches: if you cannot recreate it on demand, next time it happens try to better identify what actions took place right before. Maybe something there will trigger it again and we can all replicate it.

To me it looks like your video card hicupped on a screen refresh. On one PC, maybe yours, turn off hardware acceleration and see if the problem stays away from that one PC more than other PCs that still do this on occasion.

The issue occurs when there are a lot of different Text Styles in the drawing. If I Purge the drawing then there is less for AutoCAD to try and fill the screen with.

Seems like it is an issue in how AutoCAD is set to display all the styles.

I would like to follow up with this problem. As recently as last month, I determined that many of these intermittent problems depended on whether users used the BEDIT command or use dynamic blocks that others have created. Apparently bedit adds text styles with names such as {18b73a54-fa43-428c-adcb-c1c7bbdf2c84} to those drawings. Since the style names are so extremely long, they tend to choke the ribbon style gallery display code.

I have been trying to encourage AutoDesk to address this error/side effect but they may need feedback from other users that this would be important to fix.

Sometimes it is not what has gone before that creates the ribbon getting big problem. I can open a drawing and the first thing I do is click on text to edit and the ribbon gets big, unless what has been done in a previous drawing can affect it somehow. However, by closing the drawing in question and reopening it I find the problem sorts itself out. It is very frustrating and wastes unnecessary time when you're busy to have to close and reopen drawings.

I have just tried resaving my CUI to see if that will help.

I have just tried resaving my CUI to see if that will help.

Resurrecting an old issue, as it's still a problem in ACA 2018.

It's not a reproducable-on-demand type of flaw. This has been happening on and off for quite a while, and I've not been able to track any particular triggers that are causing this. It happened today and then again yesterday, so that's why I'm finally looking up this issue.

Someone mentioned above weird/really long text style names... none of those present in this (or any) drawings that this has ever happened on. Just our office standard ones.

I checked the CUI, it was already set to the "collapse as needed". Hitting "ok" on the CUI dialog box did nothing to solve the issue, *however* if I change the above-mentioned item to "never collapse", hit "apply", then changed it back to "collapse as needed", then "apply" again, the problem solved itself.

I'm not sure if this is a better solution than having to drop completely out of acad (especially when I have numerous drawings open) or not. One thing it is for certain is incredibly annoying.

Try purging out unused text style, fonts and shapes from the drawing. It may not be an Autocad setting. For me, it was some text fonts that needed to be purged from the drawing.

Thanks for that it is something worth trying. Although personally I can't see how that could be the issue as I use the same text styles on all my drawings and it is only some that give a problem. Worth a try though.
