terribly slow drawings in AutoCAD

I have some very slow drawings. Very simple cad files with not much in them. I suspect that an engineer has opened them in C3D possibly. Could this cause the slow down? How can I speed them up. I have done an audit and purge. Could someone opening a vanilla cad file with c3d, cause this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi @MKH-VB

What version of AutoCAD are you using and what file format are the files? Do you have the Civil Object Enabler installed? Do you get a Proxuy Objects warning?

Why don't you try a -Purge>Regapps and then a EXPORTTOAUTOCAD to see if that fixes the issue. you are welcome to attach a sample file to a post so I can take a look too.

You might also look at the scale list to see if it is enormous.

Using AutoCAD 2018 took just seconds to open it.

So the question is what version and service pack of AutoCAD are you using?

And as there is only content in Layout1 ... does the plotter exist and it the PC3-file pointing to the plotter working well?

Are all drawings slow that point to that plotter (either by layouts or predefined page-setup's)?

have had no issues with the plotter. I set other dwgs to the predefined setup and they work fine. I just get this slow issue on some (not all) dwgs. Using acad 2016. It appears to open quickly.....I see all content on the screen very quickly, but don't get my crosshairs and command line till 20 secs later. Thanks for the look.

Ahh, seems to be the difference.

When I open your drawing with AutoCAD 2018 everything is working well, also loading the drawing at normal speed.

However doing the same in AutoCAD 2016 is really slow, like you mentioned the content is shown quite fast, but then AutoCAD seems to be thinking and thinking and ...

What I tried: I saved your drawing (just after zoom-extents in Layout1) as a new file, closed all and opened it again ... working fast now ==> can you try that on your system?

Hi,

ok, my next step would now be to erase 50% of the content, save, close, reopen, watch speed ... and repeat this until you have found the bad part of the drawing.

Maybe deleting the layout and removing the predefined page-setups could be a good start for that.

I suggest to delete all these Layer filters that may cause your issue.also purge (Reg) from your drawing.

purged regapps

deleted scales

deleted pagesetups

deleted layer filters

still slow.....

I know that if I go to c3d, and export to a dwg, that it speeds up. I'm just trying to find the cause of what is causing the slowdown so as to prevent it in the future. Thanks to all!

Please try the attached file and let me know if it is still showing this slowness. I don't experience any lag on my side at all so it is hard to guess at what might be causing this issue.

I ran:

Audit

Purge>All

-Pu>All

-Pu>Regapps

I then checked your text styles and saw that I don't have one of your fonts so I remapped those two styles to Arial.

Then, I copied the contents of your paperspace and placed into a new drawing file. I created a tabloid size PDF Page Setup and applied it.

So it appears your file has C3D content that needs to load, and slowly, before giving you control. Are you running plain AutoCAD2016, or are you running C3D "as autocad" here?

UPDATE: yes your file contains a custom ARX reactor and two MAP3D applications running in it.

Hi @MKH-VB,

A reactor is a piece of code that will launch when a certain action is performed in your drawing. For instance if you type close, a reactor could run that updates certain pieces of information in your titleblock.

I am having a very similar issue with a group of files in particular.

Most of the files I deal with are all model space drawings where the text and details are drawn in paper space. And they work fine. However, I have received a couple townhome files from an architect that has everything in model space and it is overlapping (bldg. envelope, details, notes, etc...). The layers seem to be old xref files (probably about 150 or more). I have purged, set my xloadctl is set to 2, indexctl is set to 2, demand load is set to 1, treedepth is set to 3020 but it takes about 20 seconds to load and every now and then it freezes. Not to mention when saving it takes about 18 seconds to finish with a statement saying "updating indexes for block *paper_space66". Any help would be awesome as it is taking FOREVER to work on these files.

Since this thread has a solution, you should have started your own.

Are the XREFs still listed in the reference manager? Do you have those files?

There are so many things that can cause performance issues. Sharing the file(s) would eliminate the guess work and get us to the meat of the problem.
