hi, i am trying to rotate or align a customer part with the x or y axis in CAD, its a solid-works part i imported into my drawing and the typical views are not straight. I've tried to align it with a straight line and it doesn't work.

Hi,

welcome @Anonymous.autodesk.com!

>> I've tried to align it with a straight line and it doesn't work

I don't find any plane geometry in your screenshot, but as I can't rotate your screenshot there might be some areas you see as plane and you want to align to X/Y/Z.

What you might try is to create a box (using command _BOX) and then command _ALIGN to use reference points (with object snaps) from your 3D-Solid to the new box (and as the box is parallel to X/Y/Z the result should be that your object, or at least a plane on your object is then parallel to X/Y/Z too).

HTH, - alfred -

Is it possible to attach the file to a post? It should be fairly simple to find a straight line or axis in the model to align along a different axis. I am happy to look at this for you.

Hi,

not really an idea about which plane should be aligned, but please find a video that shows how to align your object to a plane on the box ... simply by using object snap QUADRANT from the holes to the MID-points of the box.

Hi @Anonymous,

I am not sure if this gets you what you are looking for but this is how I tired to get started. I drew a temporary line from the midpoint of edge and selected the filleted corners on the bottom.

Then, I changed UCS to World and drew a line from the enpoint of the previous line I constructed. Then I used 3Dalign to rotate the entire object (I made it a block first to make it easy) using the source line (first line I drew) to the target one(second line I drew. This oriented it along the xy plane. I am uncertain what the vertical element (straight up and down) should be but perhaps this gets you closer.

A plane is defined by 3 points.

The "face" of that frame is defined by 3 points and so is the XY plane

With the ALIGN or 3Dalign command you are prompted to select 3 source points and three destination points, the three source points are then aligned to the three target points. The difference between ALIGN and 3DALIGN is the order of the points.

You have osnap points on the "face" of the object you wish to align, for the destination points you can build construction lines or key in coordinates

With ALIGN you'll pick a point on the "face" then a point on the XY plane. The point on the "face" will be moved to that point on the XY plane

then you'll be prompted for a second source point on the "face" and a second destination point on the XY plane

followed by a third set of points.

With 3DALIGN, you pick 3 points on the "face", then 3 points on the XY plane.

Same number of picks either way but some seem to "see" one better than the other.
