I have a series of lines all on separate points on the Y axis, I can q select all of them with a single command, how do I then lengthen them all uniformly in both directions on the x-axis without shifting their position?

Not after QSELECTion, but.... LENGTHEN, Delta option, give it the amount, and use Fence selection? You would need to do both ends separately -- LENGTHEN with Fence selection will change only one end of an object if a single selection Fence crosses near both ends.

If they are all starting at the same length, and to be lengthened by the same amount, I have a SCALE-about-the-centers routine that could do that to all of them at once.

An illustration or sample drawing with before and after would ensure we understand what you're asking.

anyway I was underslept and dumb. I just drew stretched one line to the correct size then arrayed it. this was a non problem.

The image didn't tell us much more, not showing [or at least not identifying] a "before" situation and an "after." But given the description of your Stretch-one-and-Array-it solution, I wonder whether this is what you're trying to do:

If so, there's a much easier way to do that than your solution. I'm showing them irregularly spaced in the Y direction, which the much easier way can handle the same as if they're regularly spaced, but Stretch-one-and-Array-it would not be able to do since the Array part would only handle equal spacing. And I'm not talking about drawing Lines at the end limits and Extending to them -- those dotted lines represent just "theoretical" or "virtual" targets in the procedure, not drawn objects.

If you're interested in the much easier way, write back.
