I have a simple question:

why the name of defpoint layer is "defpoint"? why we don't use "unprinted" layer instead? thx

Hi,

The DEFPOINTS layer is created automatically the first time a dimension is created in a drawing. because this layer contains information about dimensions, you should never delete the layer because the dimension data in the drawing may become compromised.although the DEFPOINTS layer is not intended to be used as a layer for placing objects, it can sometimes be helpful to place reference or construction geometry or other objects that are intended for viewing only.

It stands for DEFinition POINTS [for Dimensions]. Don't use it for anything else. From back in the days when it was the only Layer that didn't plot, a lot of people have gotten into the [now bad ] habit of using it for other things they don't want to plot, such as construction layout stuff, viewport boundaries, etc. But since you've been able to designate any Layer to not plot for quite a long time now, for such purposes you should make one specific to the purpose and set it that way.

Do NOT use layer defpoints for ANYTHING. It exists only as the definition point for dimensions and mimics layer 0. That means anything you place on that layer, like construction lines, will be visible onscreen when your file is used as a reference file elsewhere. While they may not plot they are still cluttering up the screen and there is no way to turn them off without freezing the entire reference file. If you want a construction line that doesn't plot create a layer for them and make it no plot.

The layer name DEFPOINTS is named as such because "The Defpoints layer is used for definition points when you place dimensions in AutoCAD."

In addition to all the other explanations you should not use layer 0 (zero) either to place anything.

Layer zero should be used to create blocks.
