You should still be able to use the Undo option inside the PLINE command by simply typing U instead of Ctrl+Z, or by picking on the option in the command line prompt, or by right-clicking and picking it from the list. I don't think those choices would be affected by your undefinition/alias-adjustment/etc., any more than using the Close option is affected by C being the default command alias for CIRCLE. [But I'm not going to undefine/etc. things to duplicate your setup, in order to test that....]

Hello,

I am trying to change the shortcut for the quick undo function (pressing U+Enter). I want "U" to be the shortcut for UNGROUP instead of the quick undo function. I went into ALIASEDIT to change the "U" shortcut but it's not even there. So I assigned "U" to "UNGROUP" and applied, clicked ok, and then when I pressed U+Enter it still did an undo. Where do I find/how do I change/get rid of the "U" shortcut for the quick undo function?

Thank you

Michael Murrin

Hi @Anonymous,

I personally never prefer to change built-in shortcuts but...To change the U to ungroup you will have to first Undefine the UNDO command. Then I believe the U will work through the alias in the pgp file.

Sorry, got a little busy. This solution worked great! Thank you for your help! It's also good to know that I can easily Redifine the "U" (that is, the quick undo command as I call it) just by using the REDEFINE command if ever needed.

Information for the REDEFINE command since I failed at correctly embedding it into a word: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018/ENU/AutoCAD-Core/files/GUID-E2B53E4D-28AE-4F6E-96E4-6FABE3FF823C-htm.html

Hi,

I am coming back to this question I posted, because, unfortunately, the problem, which was solved at one point, has become UN-solved. That's the only reason I unchecked the "mark as solution" for the answer which was previously the solution.

So after this solution worked, I closed AutoCAD and opened it the next day and then the "U > Enter" keystroke was once again re-assigned to the UNDO command. Which led me to believe that AutoCAD automatically "REDEFINE"s the UNDO command to "U > Enter" once the program is closed and re-opened. I am guessing this may have to do with my profile or with one of many possible system files or other files.

It took me more than a year to finally come back and update this post with my new problem.

However, in that time, I have encountered an additional problem... now, using the UNDEFINE command does not even work for the UNDO command anymore. I entered "UNDEFINE", pressed Enter, and then for "Enter command name" I entered "UNDO". Then pressed Enter. I then went to ALIASEDIT and checked, and "U" is assigned to "UNGROUP", as I want it.

But when I press "U"... it still defaults to the UNDO command.

So now it seems like I am now unable to UNDEFINE the UNDO command anymore.

Does anyone know why this might be happening or how to change it?

Thanks,

Michael Murrin

All in AutoCAD 2016, same as what I was using last year, no updates

@Anonymous wrote:

.... the "U > Enter" keystroke was once again re-assigned to the UNDO command. ....

No, it wasn't. U is not a command alias or shortcut for UNDO, but it is a command in itself. [There's a default option in the full UNDO command to do just one step, which is equivalent to the U command, but they are separate commands.]

Try UNDEFINE-ing the U command, rather than UNDO. But you'll need to have something loaded in every drawing, such as through acaddoc.lsp, to do that and define your desired meaning of U as a command name. Something like this [untested]:

(command "_.undefine" "U")
(defun C:U ()
 (command "_.ungroup")
)

You would still be able to use the native U command without REDEFINE-ing it, by typing it in with a preceding period/decimal:

.U

Thank you for the helpful information! I ended up doing the following:

I went in our company's server and found a random acaddoc.lsp file,

copied this file over to my local C: drive,

opened the new copied file in Notepad, cleared out everything in it,

and in this new file I added:

(command "undefine" "u")

and added a return after that line, and saved this new file.

Then I opened up AutoCAD, went to Options > Files > Support File Search Path , and at the very bottom of the Support File Search Path, I added the new folder on my hard drive (which contains the new acaddoc.lsp file) to the Support File Search Path.

It seems confirmed that my AutoCAD setup did not reference to any acaddoc.lsp file prior to this, because, after I added the new folder to the bottom of the Support File Search Path, when I opened AutoCAD after doing this, AutoCAD was directed to my new acaddoc.lsp file. I typed "U" in the command line in AutoCAD and it successfully did "UNGROUP". I didn't have to re-assign anything to "UNGROUP" in the lisp file because "U" is already assigned to "UNGROUP" in ALIASEDIT (not by default, but changed by me previously) and evidently that seems to stay the same even after closing and opening AutoCAD.

I did run into one last road bump though, which was that, now, the "Ctrl+Z" command now was mapped to UNGROUP instead of undo. However, I fixed this as well. I went to the ribbon in the top, went to Manage > User Interface (CUI). Then went to Keyboard Shortcuts > Shortcut Keys > Undo.

I then found that under "Command Display Name" it said "U". I changed this to "UNDO". (I should point out that by this time I had already "REDEFINE"d the full-word UNDO command prior to this).

And under "Macro" it said "_u". After playing around with it I found that changing it to "_undo 1" got it to do what I wanted it to do, which was to UNDO one command.

So now, "U" is set to "UNGROUP", and "Ctrl+Z" is set to UNDO one command which is effectively the same as what it did before. I have tested this by closing and re-opening AutoCAD multiple times and opening multiple files, and everything is working properly.

Got it to do what I wanted to do.

Thanks for the help.

(Also, I have read, after the fact, that finding an existing acaddoc.lsp file wasn't necessary - that I could just create a new file in Notepad and save it as a .lsp file instead of a .txt file, and name it acaddoc.lsp. I haven't confirmed this but this is what I have heard).

I was going to add this to my previous post but it looks like I can't edit the post since it's from a couple days ago.

This change has unfortunately led to another (minor) issue which I currently don't have a solution for, and perhaps there is no solution for this one (besides reverting the settings all back to the way they were).

When I am in the middle of a PLINE command, I used to be able to press "Ctrl+Z" and it would undo the last point of the polyline. This is very convenient when you are drawing a polyline with many segments to it and you accidentally click on the wrong point. But with my new settings, since "Ctrl+Z" is now mapped to "UNDO <1>", instead of just being mapped to "U", I am now unable to use that "U" feature while in the middle of a command like PLINE. I presume this is because you can't run a command inside a command, and "UNDO" is a "real" command, whereas "U" is special in some way (I have no idea what way) that allows you to use it while you are in the middle of another command.

(Oh - and I did try using ".U", by typing in ".U" (just a period and a U) into the command line while in the middle of the PLINE command. This did not function however, presumably because it won't work while I am in the middle of another command. But just wanted to point out that I did try this. And, of course, this .U command (typing in a period and a U) does work when I am not in the middle of another command.)

I don't know if there is a solution to this, and this is pretty minor so I think I'm willing to keep it this way (because I don't draw big complex polylines very often). So for me, the initial problem is still solved, but I wanted to point out that my solution did bring up this other minor problem; this way, any other users can see how these changes will affect their setup. And, of course, just in case there is some solution to this, I wanted to post this also just to check in case there is a way to solve this while still keeping "U" mapped to "UNGROUP".

Thanks

You should still be able to use the Undo option inside the PLINE command by simply typing U instead of Ctrl+Z, or by picking on the option in the command line prompt, or by right-clicking and picking it from the list. I don't think those choices would be affected by your undefinition/alias-adjustment/etc., any more than using the Close option is affected by C being the default command alias for CIRCLE. [But I'm not going to undefine/etc. things to duplicate your setup, in order to test that....]

Perfect - thank you for the help. Typing "U" and then hitting Enter worked perfectly, and will now be my go-to for undo-ing points in the middle of a PLINE command. Clicking "Undo" in the command prompt while in the PLINE command also worked.

Right-clicking while in the PLINE command 'didn't work', but maybe because I clicked in the wrong place or have different settings. When I am in a PLINE command, click a few points, and then right-click in Model Space, it ends the command rather than showing a menu.

But I still marked your answer as a solution because the "U" and then Enter (while in PLINE command) is the solution for me (and is my first choice of the three options you listed).
