The error message you posted only means one thing: the ASSN2 file is R2018 format, which is not compatible with 2017.

The error message means nothing else.

Either post the ASSN2 file here for all of us to look at, or go to school and ask your teacher about it for help.

I'm enrolled as a student so this is my first run with AutoCAD and I am utilizing the free student version. I managed to get through half of an assignment in class then finished it up at home. I opened a save ASSN 1 with the class room version as well as my home version. But on ASSN 2, my second assignment, I finished it, saved it and plotted while at school. Now that I'm at home I tried to open it and my 2017 version is saying that it can't because the file was saved with a newer version. I can still open ASSN 1 at home but it gives me an error with ASSN 2.

I think that the DWG file that you have tried to open format is 2018.

That is why you can't open in the Auto CAD 2017.

The format can only open in the AutoCAD 2018.

Therefore you have to down DWG format by using DWG Trueviewer.

This site is DWG Trueviewer Download site.

This Link How to convert format in DWG Trueviewer

Okay then why can I open ASSN 1 that was created / saved at school, finished / saved at home then plotted at school.

Check your ASSN2 format type, Open ASSN2 DWG file as Notepad, not ACAD.exe.

Then you can see an unknown word.

In the notepad, Check the Red box!. (What was recorded AC XXXX)

If it was written AC1032, That is 2018 format, So you can not open ASSN2 drawing at the AutoCAD 2017.

So it needs to convert earlier version format.

See this AutoCAD file format.

The solution is to save the file as and older version, being I still have access to AutoCAD 2018 I just resaved it in an older version. If I didn't have that I would download Trueviewer as Sonppw suggested.
