Hi AutoCad community folks

First post as somewhat of a noob

Learning AutoCad....longtime SU user

I have a doc that I just want to remove layers from but every layer I try and delete says

You cannot delete layers that are 0, def points, with objects (does this mean blocks?) or xrefs

So I'm not trying to delete layer=0 or defpoints

Is there a "just delete it regardless of what' its attached to?

Looking at the docs xref pallete there doesn't seem to be any.....but a quick snoop around the forum and there seems to be no singular command that lets you detach all xrefs and they can get hidden (nested)...the number of posts around this is huge...so perhaps its objects...how do I un-associate objects and other external things from the drawing ...just want to delete some layers???....all thoughts appreciated...TIA...Hugh

It means just what it says. You can't delete or purge a layer that is referenced. You can, however, rename it. You can also merge it with another layer.

Qselect can help you find objects that are on the layer in question. Also, laywalk does a pretty good job. Laymrg can be used to merge layers to a target layer, resulting in the merged layers being deleted.

If you don't need any layers, just select everything and assign them the layer 0. Then use purge. If that doesn't work, laymrg or the nuclear option wblock can be used to essentially create a new drawing from selected objects.

Defpoint Layer is created when you create some dimension.

Its Layer feature is not able to Plot.

But You can delete it by using LAYDEL command.

0 Layer is a default setting for at least maintain Layered objects.
