Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Please run AUDIT on the file to see if that finds errors. If you are still unable to work with the file, you are welcome to add it to a post for me to examine.

If the file was created in a student version then , as @Alfred.NESWADBA indicated, you should not use this file for your work. If however, it was created in a legitimate license but somewhere got tagged with the student license stamp then there shouldn't be a problem.

I am happy to look at the file for you if you like.

I have a drawing sent to me from 2007. I need to draw an updated mechanical plan on it. The individual sending me the file said it has been corrupted by a student version and that the file is in autocad 2000. Is there a way to update this file to open in autocad 2017 without corrupting my version? Or is my only option to redraw the basic layout of the building?

@Anonymous hello try to go drawing utilities > recover and open the file. in the command prompt just type Audit to fix errors. you can open your file from lower version to higher version vice versa. it won't affect your version. Then from there we can establish if you can recover your file or you need to redraw from scratch . thanks

Just one sentence according to license rules ... if the drawing was created using a education version you are not allowed to use it in a commercial project, this would be a violation against the education license rules.

Everyone has the correct idea, but I didn't see anyone mention is that if you open a dwg with the student stamp on it in version 2015 or later it will just remove the stamp. So if it wasn't fully created in a student version and it just got corrupted by a block or something by mistake then if you open it in 2017 I wouldn't worry about it. I'd do the recover and audit just to help clear up the file since it's old at the very least just to be safe.

AS noted above, R2017 does not display the EDU stamp: but it will not remove it, it simply does not show it.

Try a google search for a solution to send to your file issuer to fix their files, it works for older versions.

I stand corrected I thought 2015 and up just removed it. Good to know it just hides it or doesn't display it.

EDIT: I was googling how to remove the stamp just for my own curiosity and on autodesk knowledge page it says that it removes the stamp. So my understanding is that 2015 and newer hide the stamp when drawings are opened but once they are save in the newer version it removes stamp. Would that be what is happening? I'm not trying to split hairs. I just don't want to pass information on that is incorrect in the future.

From autodesk knowledge page

"AutoCAD 2015 (and newer) has been designed to remove the plot stamp altogether when a drawing is saved. "

If by corrupted you mean it has a stamp on it when plotting, try exporting it as a .dxf and then importing it again, then save as dwg. It worked well for me in the past. As for the ethical part, there´s no anyone but you to be sure about where the file comes from.
