I'm looking for a way to have a field within a table in paperspace automatically count the number of dynamic blocks in the drawing. For example, I want to total up how many cameras are on Floor 1 and have it displayed in a table.

I'd think this would be a core feature - getting the totals for component equipment and fixtures. But I can't seem to find the solution. I don't want to extract the data to an outside source, I just want it shown within the drawing.

Any ideas?

Hi @jdolaskie,

Have you considered using a DATAEXTRACTION table to capture such information? If you have a sample file that you can share on a post, I am happy to show you this might work for you.

Hey John, I experimented with data extraction where I extracted the data then attempted to reference it from within the drawing. I don't know if there's something like a loop error, but it corrupted the file.

What I want is something simpler. If it takes longer to set up the extraction method than it would be to count the blocks myself, then it's wasted effort.

I want the table within the drawing itself to have the dynamic bcount. I don't want to extract it to an external source.

If I misunderstood and you're referring to a way to do what I'm looking for, then I apologize.

Attached is a sample.

Thanks!

Hi @jdolaskie,

I set up a sample data extraction and recorded it in a video for you. I selected to count only blocks and a couple properties but you could eliminate that if all you want to do is count them.

When I run the extraction, I place the results in a table inside the drawing itself. I like to place such tables in paperspace (personal preference). Then to show you how easy it is to update, I duplicated some of your camera blocks. I then rt-click on the table and tell it to update. It easily reflects the new count of the camera blocks.

Please give this another try because it can be REALLY fast and easy to use. And, for what it is worth, I have never found a dataextraction to corrupt a drawing.

Perfect, that works. Thanks John!

Regarding the corrupted file, I tinkered with it so much that I think I broke something, entirely my fault.

Thanks again.
