"The specified Excel File is not valid or not support" error with Data Links

Hello

I am having issues with my use of data links in Autocad 2017/18. All of a sudden, I can no longer update data link tables on my drawings, or link in new ones due to the error "Only Excel 2000, Excel 2003, and Excel 2007 file formats are supported. You will need to save the Excel file into one of these formats". I don't believe anything has changed on my computer to warrant this, and all Microsoft updates are up to date. This is on a company computer and mine is the only one that is experiencing this issue.

I tried to change the excel file myself but that does not change anything. Considering how much I use this, i need to fix this.

If anyone has any ideas that would be great!

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

There are two recent Microsoft security updates that I am aware of that can cause AutoCAD and Excel to not cooperate: KB4041691 and KB4041676.

Can you check to see if these are installed and if so, please try removing them to see if that corrects the functionality?

I have neither of those security updates installed. I confirmed with someone else in the office (who has no issues with data links) and they also don't have them installed.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for checking. Can you attach a dwg and the associated Excel file?

Here is an article that details this error and one of the reasons is that FoxIt add-in is installed in Excel. Is this part of the equation?

I don't have anything resembling Foxit Reader on my add-ins for excel. I have attached a DWG that already has data links in them (done by others) which i cannot reload.

I opened the XLS file in Office 365 and saved it to a XLSX format. I rebuilt the data link and it appears to update properly. Can you try this on your side?

I have changed the excel file to an XLSX file but they still comes up with the same error (on those same drawings).

Hi @Anonymous,

Which version of Excel are you using on your computer? Is it the 64-bit version? Do you have any Excel Add-ins running?

I am running version 14.0.7188.5002 (32-bit), which is the same as what others are using in the office (and works on their machine). There are no active add-ons for excel on my machine.

HI @Anonymous,

I think it might worth downloading a trial of the 64-bit version to see if that makes any difference. Otherwise, remove your current Excel and then reinstall it to see if that corrects this issue.
