Cursor becomes mis-aligned or detached from mouse pointer when using 3D orbit

I've searched all over for this one but nobody has the answer.

When i use 3D orbit or shift + middle mouse click to look around my drawing in 3D the AutoCAD cursor becomes completely detached from my mouse pointer which makes it impossible for me to do anything accurately. Here's a screenshot:

This is either a setting that i have inadvertently turned on/off or a terrible bug. I urgently need to get to the bottom of why its happening!

Hi,

are you using a 4K diisplay? ... and which graphic card do you have built in and using in AutoCAD.

Please start command _GRAPHICSCONFIG and turn off hardware acceleration for a test.

When the dialog for hw-acceleration is active please create a screenshot from that dialog and show that image here.

Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M - Up to date Drivers

I forgot to mention that i am already using AutoCAD with Hardware Acceleration turned off. No i don't have a 4k display.

Hi,

does the same happen when you turn on the hw acceleration?

One other try (before we reset the AutoCAD profile) ... what about creating a new Windows user, login with that account, open a new drawing, create a simple box, run orbit to get a new view, not try the selection ... same issue?

The same happens with hardware acceleration on.

I'm afraid to say i solved this but the solution does not make much sense!

I started a new drawing and copied everything including an xref and pasted it into my new drawing. Now the problem is gone. I wish i could understand why it was happening in the first place but nevermind!
