XREF manager won't load

I'm having trouble keeping my XREF manager loaded in AutoCAD 2017. At some point recently it stopped loading automatically when AutoCAD starts in the morning. When I type "XREF" in the command line nothing happens. The CUI settings are as I want them: Show: yes; Orientation: left; Allow docking: yes; Auto Hide: on; Use Transparency: no; Height: 1027; Width: 400. I've tried changing all of these settings but the xref manager still won't show up.

However, if I close all my drawings, restart AutoCAD, and type "xref" again, it will magically appear ... though even if I save the workspace with the xref maganer visible it will disappear again the next day.

This has me baffled. Any thoughts?

Hi,

once it's appeared and disappear ... have you lately install any plugins that may some times make such a problem . try to reset AutoCAD to default settings and see if it's work . >> Click <<

Hi,

try to change that settings:

>> Allow docking: yes; Auto Hide: on

...change them to no/false

Then restart AutoCAD and then replace the posiition of the palette window.

No new plugins, and I really don't want to revert all my customization to the default settings.

Whether or not I change the position and size settings, restarting AutoCAD will result in the xref manager turned off but it will turn on when I type "xref".

I've tried saving my workspace after finally geting the xref manager visible and placed it in my ideal location, but the next morning it will be turned off again.

So this XREF pallette only disappears overnight?
But stays in place once corrected no matter how many times you close and open AutoCAD during the same day?

Correct.

I've also just noticed that the CUI settings for the xref manager seem to be changing overnight. The are currently set at: Show: no; Orientation: floating; Allow docking: no; Auto Hide: off; Use Transparency: no; Height: 0; Width: 0. This is despite me saving the workspace yesterday with my preferred settings as mentioned above. Manually changing these settings doesn't allow the xref manager to appear, though I'm sure if I were to restart AutoCAD now it would turn on once I type "xref".

Hi,

then your login script or your Windows user account does not sync all settings correct or resets to an AutoCAD that has defects when you login to your system.

Ask your network admin 😉

As long as Windows user profiles are synchronized the admin's are the only one who can help.

That AutoCAD itself does save the values correctly can be seen as multiple starts of AutoCAD work well ... as long as you don't logout and login again. So something happens with start of your workstation or login to your Windows account.

One additional idea: you have a tool installed, that cleans up registry? ... If so, just uninstall it.

We're a tiny office and I'm probably the closest thing to a network admin that we have. I'll try digging around for something that would be playing with the setting on the initial startup, though I'd welcome any pointers anyone has.

Any idea why saving the workspace with the xref manager visible doesn't work?

By reading your responses, it looks like there is a pre-set and as you descripted, assuming that you don't have any addons, scripts, etc.

Apart from others replies, I'd ask you to search "acaddoc.lsp" and "acaddoc20XX.lsp" (20XX is your AutoCAD release) in your local directory. It may also help if checking in a "public drive" in your network.

Then open them with Notepad to check if there is anything unusual. Or upload the files here people may take a look for you.

Have the problem been resolved? Sorry I haven't looked at your reply since.

What I suspected was your machine might be loaded with customised script(s) or the 2 LSPs mentioned were modified for some reason.

"acad2017doc.lsp" looks ok to me.

But what about "acaddoc.lsp"?

I don't see that file anywhere. There's an "acad2017.lsp," but that just seems to load "acad2017doc.lsp".

Some further debugging information:

- not that this is a surprise, but the problem happens after a reboot and isn't just a once-a-day issue.

- more interestingly, on my first AutoCAD load of the day if I open a single drawing and type "xref" immediately, the menu will appear. I still don't know why my workspace settings are being reset to have the menu turned off, but the failure of the "xref" command to work must be tied to something other than the first run of AutoCAD (I usually don't remember to try it until things have been running a while and I have several drawings open).

Hmm...

Are you sure there is no one modified your settings (IT, workmates, etc.)?

Also see if it helps by carefully following the suggestions from others in this thread.

I'm quite sure no person is modifying my settings each time I reboot (though you've inspired my next office prank).
