This is quite an interesting requirement from one of my colleague. The description is as follows:

A 3D model is generated using Siemens NX and the drawing is created by importing the model in AutoCAD. Now the requirement is that, AutoCAD should be able to calculate the outer most dimensions or the stock size and display it in the title block; in order to avoid human error when typing it manually.

Is there any method to do so in AutoCAD?

Thanks in advance

Hi Pendean,

I believe most of us are conversant with the term "Stock Size". If not, like in your case, the stock/blank size simply means the size of any (raw)component before machining it to get the final product. Further, eplanation regarding the Title block with an example is as follows:

"There is a rectangular block which is machined and all sort of work is done to turn it to a final component. Now most companies do need the outer dimensions before putting the drawing into production for various reasons ( just to keep it short 🙂 ). I wish to know, how can we bring those outer dimensions (stock dimensions/largest dimensions) into the title block directly without actually typing them manually."

I am sorry, I do not have a picture as of now. Your help would be appreciated. Let me know in case of any further doubts.

There is no out-of-the box general method to do just that.

Anyway, your problem should be divided into four independent parts:

1) transferring the raw data to AutoCAD

2) creating a correct native AutoCAD object from the data

3) finding out the dimensions

4) filling the dimensions into the title block

All of these have alternate ways, depending on how the original object is modelled, how it is transferred, which end does the conversions, and how you generate your drawings and title blocks.

Quite likely you can't do this without manual intervention, unless you absolutely fix the workflows at each stage.

For example when we do this transfer, sometimes the result is in 1:4 scale, sometimes 1:5, and depending on what the NX designer did, there might be all 2D projections in the same 3D space etc. Also things like directions of surface normals for arcs are different for NX and ACAD.

--
