Please see post #5. That is the key to having the layer properties settings either remain as set in the referencing file or take on the properties set in the XREF file.

That setting applies to all XREFs. You need to decide where you want the control and use that for all XREFs.

I have manipulated a drawing to appear how I would like it to before I xref it in to a new drawing (it has multiple attached xrefs as well as active linework). When I xref that manipulated drawing (changed layer colors and linetypes of active linework and xreferences) in to a new drawing, it reverts back to layer colors and linetypes from the very original form of each drawing, pre-manipulation. It seems to be only reverting the colors and linetypes of the attached xrefs but I can't be completely sure. In the past, when I reference a drawing in to a new drawing, it appeared like the drawing at the time of reference, not way before. Is there a setting that I accidentally changed? I have attached a couple images to show what is happening. The "drawing before referencing" image is the drawing with active linework and attached xrefs that I want to reference in to a new drawing to annotate over. This is how I want the drawing to appear after I reference it in to the new drawing. The "drawing after referencing" image is how the drawing looks after I reference it in to the new drawing. In theory it should look exactly like the "before referencing" image, but it doesn't.

Thanks for your help!

VISRETAIN is set to (1) and XREFOVERIDE is set to (0).

I want changes that I make in the new reference drawing to always remain (thus visretain set to 1) however, I would like to start from the properties that I created in xref drawing at the time of reference.

VISRETAIN = 1 means that any XREF layer settings in the referencing file will remain the same.

VISRETAIN = 0 means the referencing drawing will take the layer properties from the XREF file(s).

See attached files. "Reference File" is the file that I am xrefing in to "new file after reference". It has multiple attached xref's in it. I also attached images of what each file looks like on my computer. Thank you for your help! I would think that when I reference "reference file" in to "new file after reference" that my "new file after reference" would look identical to "reference file"....

I've also noticed that when I xref the reference drawing in to my new drawing, it is also un-freezing layers that I had frozen in the reference drawing before xrefing. These in theory should stay frozen, correct? In the past they have.
