Hi All,

I have been having a problem with AutoCAD 2018 (Commercial Standalone Licence) in particular when attempting to create or edit hatching. I get the following error message within seconds of selecting a hatch object.

" FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0c40 Exception at ac2c1ad7h."

I have tested the file with others in the office running AutoCAD LT 2018 (Commercial Standalone Licences) however they do not experience the same troubles. I also have Civil 3D 2018 which I open as AutoCAD 2018 (Commercial Network Licence) and also do not experience any problems.

I have contacted Autodesk and have had several attempts with IT to do all of the recommended trouble shooting processes;

- Update software (AutoCAD and Windows 7)

- Uninstall/Reinstall (All Autodesk platforms process of elimination)

- Created new windows user profiles

- Turned off graphics acceleration and configurations

The computer I have been using is as follows;

HP EliteBook 840 G3 (64bit)

i7-6600U 2.6GHz

16 GB RAM

Intel HD Graphics 520

I must also add that I was comfortably using this arrangement for a month or two prior to the fatal errors occurring. The only thing I can do is a full reinstall of windows and applications (Time consuming when you have work to execute).

I know it will be recommended to just use Civil 3D however it is a network licence and designers need access to it more than I do at this stage. I am the only one with the ACAD 2018 standalone licence so it is better for me to resolve this issue rather than continue with a stop-gap measure of Civil 3D.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's time to reinstall the OS if you are unable to identify what triggered the system changes a month- or two ago and if a Win7 system restore back the middle of last year doesn't cure the problem.

I tried to find your case with support on this but did not find it under your email. Do you have a case number so I can re-visit this?

This sounds like the issue might be related to your graphics card or driver. Have you tried older/newer drivers for your card?

Is this happening in all your drawings or just specific ones?

Hi John,
I did have an old case number [CaseNo:13671079] however it had been closed because no resolution could be found.
It's a really confusing situation because I can not replicate the error using either LT or C3D it only occurs using ACAD.
Any drawing with a hatch. And know I have realised other commands can cause the fatal error also......

Hi @marcus.grinham,

I am sure the other specialist indicated that the graphics card is not on the certified list. I was reading a bit on the card and I am now curious what your display settings are set to. It doesn't appear that it is designed for really high res.

Does this happen with lots of drawings or just certain ones that have a lot of hatches? Can you send me one so I can play with it? I would like to see if I can get it to blow up on my laptop.

Did you try toggling HQGEOM or HPQUICKPREVIEW?

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. I turned off hardware acceleration and I assumed when you were talking resolution it was the windows display settings so I backed them right off to 800x600. I couldn't seem to recreate the crash however once returning them to the highest settings again with a little bit of clicking and selecting the crash came back.

I have had these settings for months however it was only in December that the error started. I mentioned the error is only on ACAD Full, there is no error using ACAD LT or C3D as AutoCAD. I have attached the file I have been using to recreate the error however it is happening on multiple drawings and not just when selecting hatches, it does seem most touchy with hatches though.

Thanks

Marcus

This file had 12 AUDIT errors and 57 regapps. Perhaps run AUDIT and then -PURGE>Regapps to see if that improves the issue.

Hi John,

I normally run those commands and have tried again with no resolution. I'm just so confused as to why one software application has issues and not the other two as well.

HI Marcus - I am starting to think it is possibly an Object Enabler. Civil would not have it obviously and LT who knows. Let me reach out to a couple of folks as I research this a bit.

When you get the fatal error, do you have the opportunity to submit a crash report? If so, do you have a report number I can look up?

[EDIT] I found it. It appears to have something to do with the ASM. Let me research to see if I can find a way to get it working properly.

Hi John,

I have submitted a number of crash reports, so many that I gave up in the end.

I have reduce the HPMAXLINES from 100000 to 10000 on the recommendation of the Autodesk Support Team however this did not resolve the issue either.

Regards

Marcus

Thanks Marcus,

It appears from the reports that this issue is related to the way ASM is interacting with the hatch. I am contacting that team and hope they can shed some light on the issue. Thanks for your patience.

I am curious how the re-build of this computer has affected the issue. Are you still experiencing the fatal errors?

Hey John,
Received the re-built computer late last night. A quick test and everything seems OK, however we have had a false sense of security before. I got the problem again on the temporary laptop which was concerning.
I deleted the profile and reset any customisation and it seemed to respond better. Potentially an issue with a customisation file/setting?

HI @marcus.grinham,

Thank you for the update. Customization is certainly a possibility.

Is it possible to run without any customizations for a day or so to see if the fatal errors remain in check? If so, then we can try adding the customizations back a little at a time.

I am wondering if this is bad hardware though. Is it possible for your IT person to run some serious diagnostics on the system?

Just chiming in as I'm having this issue as well. Here is what I know:

Issue: Selecting a hatch crashes AutoCAD with the "FATAL ERROR: Unhandled Access Violation Reading 0x0c40 Exception At xxxxxxxx" code.

Happens in 2018 and 2019 (AutoCAD Architecture running 'As AutoCAD').

I do not have the issue in vanilla AutoCAD.

Does not happen with the Properties palette closed.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/AutoCAD-freezes-when-hatch-object-selected.html

Only happens on some machines (regardless of video card/driver/OS).

Things I have tested:

Recovered the file

Video driver

Video acceleration

Admin access to local machine vs. standard user

Local vs. Server based paths in the search path

I'm at wits end. I've been an AutoCAD administrator for 20 years and I've never seen anything like it.
Any help is appreciated.

-JP

Based on the post above about it possibly being an object enabler issue, I removed the Civil3d Object enabler from the test machine I'm working on and the issue seems to be resolved. ???

I'll test on a few more machines. I'll also see if there is a version difference between the OE in the deployment and the most recent one on the Autodesk site.

I have reinstalled the Civil3D OE and removed a few times on a few machine sand the issue definitely seems to be tied to the OE. (at least here... for me).

Unreal!!! Finally a stable fix. Still, would be great to have the OE as we interface with firms that Use Civil3D all the time...

Thanks for your help!

Hi @jpCADconsulting,

I looked through the XML file in your crash error reports and it definitely looks like a Civil 3D object enabler issue. I also noticed that there are some errors related to an outdated video card driver as well. You might try updating that driver and see if it helps with stability.
