Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member to the AutoCAD forum. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Can you give me more detail on your question? Are you attempting to set up a template file with setting and/or views to help you with isometric and other 2D work?

Can you provide a sample of what you want the final product to be? A template can store a whole variety of things but perhaps you are looking to make a variety of views in modelspace or some projected views using the Viewbase command.

Hi,

Not sure how familiar you are with 2D Isometric drafting but I am attaching a sample template that I have developed for Isometric drawing and dimensioning. The text styles, arrowhead blocks, and dimension styles were very cumbersome to develop and you would have to change dimension styles based on the orientation of a particular dimension. The leader styles are also a bit tough to get used to but practice can help.

ALTERNATIVELY...

I show my students that they can begin an isometric drawing with this template then they can drag or re-locate the desired isometric dimensions and leaders to attach to their own objects. There are many combinations and orientations to choose from and all of them seem to adjust to the appropriate data when re attaching the grips to the new object being dimensioned... except the leaders of course! This will require text override to yield correct data. Leaders are necessary because diameter and radius dimensions are simply not possible on isometric 2D drawings.

As for combining 2D orthographic views and Iso views... I am also attaching a sample drawing that has both. I would say that in these drawings you would rarely dimension the Iso view but instead only the orthographic views. Thus, a standard template would work for combo drawings, allowing you to just draw the Iso objects using standards of 2D Iso drawing.

If you are wanting to do 3D then that another direction entirely.

Much Luck,

Hi @Anonymous,

The rocker post drawing has all the view in modelspace and are visible through the single viewport in the paperspace layout.

Do you have a sample of what you are trying to produce? It sounds like you are able to create viewports in your model now. I am curious however if you had considered doing your work in a 3D model instead of in 2D?

If you have created your model in 3D in modelspace you can use the VIEWBASE command to create a variety of projected views in paperspace. This might be much faster and easier than the older Isometric method.

Re: isometric and 2 dimensional drawings on the same template in autocad

I'll detail how to accomplish what I showed in the Rocker Post, then I'll explain a little about the 3D method I suggested earlier and @john.vellek mentioned as well.

I am uploading 3 of my common template files. These dwt files should open in your version of ACAD.

Using the ANSI A&B.dwt file as your template...

Create your Front, Top, and Right side orthographic projections in Model Space just as you would a normal drawing.

Stay within the model space grid area (11" x 8.5" for this tutorial.

Follow all rules you may have learned about aligning views and showing hidden and center lines.

Dimension the orthographic views in Model Space (you may also consider dimensioning in PaperSpace but I'll leave that to your preference "FOR NOW").

Once finished all design in Model Space click on the first layout tab (ANSI A) for PaperSpace.

My templates always have borders and title blocks setup on layouts and Viewports already placed.

You will see some or all of your Model Space objects in the Viewport area.

Double-click the left mouse button in the viewport area and then double-click your mouse wheel in that area as well. This will zoom all objects to fit in the viewport area and center themselves.

Now look at the lower left area of your screen and you should see a scale indicator drop-down arrow that will be some number that represents the size your objects scaled to fit in the viewport. Select that list and choose 1:1 for your scale. The objects will shrink or grow to a full scale size and they will be centered. Feel free to choose whatever scale suits the needs of your drawing.

Now double-click your left button outside of the viewport area to return to working on the page instead of within the viewport.

This concludes adjusting the orthographic projections. Now for the ISO...

Return to the Model tab to work again in Model Space.

Choose an area away from your orthographic views to create your 2D Isometric model view.

Remember that receding angle for ISO should be 30 degrees from zero and 30 degrees from 180. The "Z" thinknesses of your model will be represented by 90 degree lines.

Also remember to draw in full size or 1:1 scale using the same measurements you would have used in your orthographic views.

Once you have completed the Isometric model and it is placed well away from the other views you can go back to the ANSI A layout tab.

Now you need to create viewport for your Isometric model (can't recal your ACAD version but if you do a quick google search on creating a viewport in your version of AutoCAD I'm sure you will have a good lesson.

Your new viewport should be about a quarter the size or smaller than of the primary viewport and should initially be placed outside of the paper and border area until all adjustments are made.

With the new viewport outside other areas you can double-click in it to activate Model Space editing with (the new viewport will likely show everything from model Space at first).

Use your mouse to select only your Isometric model objects and then type "Z" then enter, then "O" enter. This is the shortcut for Zoom-Objects.

Your Iso objects should zoom to fit the viewport and center themselves.

Now choose a scale from the scale list again to get the desired scale for your Iso object view.

Now double-click outside of the secondary viewport to de-activate Model Space editing.

Move your second viewport to a location in the border and enjoy your new Orthographic detail drawing with Isometric Pictorial View!

Whew that was a bunch. I might consider doing a screencast if you wish???

Maybe we can continue with some 3D trials once you let me know that you have succeeded with this level??

Cheers,

I’ve read through this thread several times and it is still unclear to me whether or not the OP wants to work exclusively in 2D to create traditional orthographic views and a 2D isometric projection or does he want to create a 3D model and then derive from it the orthographic views and an isometric view.

The last post of @beyoungjr (#11) seems to be a combination of the two. His file “ANSI A&B.dwt” contains 4 viewports that include the standard front, right, and top views plus a viewport that is at an isometric orientation. These viewports imply the construction of a 3D model unless you are recommending that the 2D top, front and right projections be create on their respective principal planes. If the user is constructing a 3D model then why talk about the construction of a 2D isometric?

If the user is to construct a 2D isometric drawing then perhaps the “isometric” viewport should really be a front view with isometric grids and snaps set as is the case in the template file “2004 ISO Template.dwg” (post 8).

The OP does state that “2004 ROCKER POST ISO.dwg” is exactly what he wants to accomplish but is he referring to just the appearance of the drawing or to the implementation which is from a 3D model which results in the multiview drawing?

Would the OP please clarify, are you looking to create a multiview drawing of:

A 3D model viewed from several orientations (front, top, iso…) via viewports in a paper space layout?

A 3D model with 2D views derived via the projected-view feature of AutoCAD (that could include an isometric)?

A 2D model that contains several 2D orthographic views and a 2D isometric drawing all of which are independent from each other?

Something else?
