I just tried this in my 2016 and it does not hold the selection set through these commands. To the best of my knowledge, only transparent commands will allow for that kind of behavior. If there is a system specific setting that holds a selection set I don't know it.

is there a variable to set that will maintain a selection after LAYON command has been issued? I am used to isolating a layer, then selecting certain linework, then turning the layers back on and maintaining the selection. I realize that there may be a better workflow, so far I haven't come up with anything that is quicker to make layer specific selections.

If you use the "Select" command when selecting the objects, then after restoring the layers you can start a command and use "P" for "Previous" to get back to those objects.

1. Layiso

2. Select - select objects)

3. Layuniso

4. Move - "P"

It works in 2016 only when you use a button to start the command, not the command line. Is it a glitch? One that became part of my workflow. 😄 I'm relearning the keystrokes now for Selection previous. I realized that I had STRETCH set to alias "S" and so I actually wasn't using the SELECT PREVIOUS command I was using the STRETCH PREVIOUS. That's why I couldn't get to the right dialogue to change the layer order. Thank you for the quick replies.

I'm thinking someone might have modified your 2016 CUI to add extra steps for you as a macro. If you know how to get in there, I'd recommend looking through it so see.

You're spot on. I feel like a real noob here. I went back to investigate. The "button" that I'm using is a custom one that invokes the -layer command and some other options after that. I'm looking into how it was made so that I can re-create for 2018. This is a legacy customization that I didn't know about until now. Thanks for taking time to address my questions! 😄

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend that if you want to use macros like that, then you put them in a TOOL PALETTE and not the CUI. Tool Palettes are easier to transport and migrate (IMHO).

And LAYER is a command that can be transparent!

Put this in a command macro:

'-layer on * ;

with both the asterisk [for transparent operation] and hyphen [for command-line rather than dialog-box operation] before the command name. Object selection is preserved [in 2016 that I have here].
