AutoCAD 2018 REGEN bug when multiple drawings open

When I have several drawings open (approximately 10, using more than 1GB of system memory), AutoCAD no longer refreshes the screen after completing a command. So, say I move an object, the object shows up where I moved it, but a ghosted version, often with other visual artifacts, remains at the old location.

When I manually refresh (RE) or scroll-zoom in model space and paper space, the old location and artifacts disappear. In paper space model space viewports, only scrolling works to refresh the screen. If I turn off Hardware Acceleration, the problem goes away, but then my crosshairs blip whenever moving them and I don't get the benefits of the hardware acceleration.

I'm using a certified card: Radeon Pro WX 5100 (driver 22.19.693.256, 2017/12/01). Full specs below. Do note that this issue is also happening on my home computer, which uses an NVIDIA graphics card, so I think we can rule out hardware and video graphics drivers – this appears to solidly be an AutoCAD 2018 problem, as neither computer has this problem using AutoCAD 2016.

Hi @nrz13,

I looked up that case number and it had been closed as it was a duplicate of your other case (13836075) which was closed as solved. Can you review your correspondence on that case and let me know if this is the same issue or something different?

If you remove the two updates dos the behavior change?

The first one was never solved. I don't know if the second case was created when I added additional information or what. I don't recall manually creating a separate one.

Since you are still having this issue and it has been over 30 days, I suggest you create a new case. I am curious however to find out if removing the .1 and .2 updates will correct the problem.

A third case has been created per your recommendation. The old case said it would automatically reopen if I added more information, but that has not been true as far as I can tell, as it still reports it as closed to me.

One further item of note: in working with AMD tech support, they said it is not an issue with their drivers; they also suggest it being an AutoCAD issue.

I made a video to show my screen behavior in 2018.1. I have 11 drawing files open of varying complexity (many of them 3D or with a large number of hatches) I can't seem to duplicate what you are showing in your video. Does it happen if you switch tabs frequently? Can you show me a screen capture of your graphicsconfig window?

FYI, I'm not using the Ribbon (ribbonclose) or Statusbar (statusbar = 0), only Properties palette is open on second monitor. It shouldn't matter, but I know these sorts of things have made a difference before for other bugs.

I've tested it with nearly blank drawings and it happens immediately once a number have been opened, regardless of how often I cycle through drawings.

I don't want to confuse things by working this issue in the forum when you also have a case started but I am still curious if toggling HQGEOM makes any difference?

For the first time since installing 2018, I'm unable to replicate this issue (with high quality geometry on or off). It has always happened and now it is apparently intermittent, which always makes problem-solving fun. It happened earlier this week. I haven't changed anything on my end, although who knows what Microsoft is automatically installing without my knowledge these days.

High quality geometry also appears to be working for now as well, whereas it was dumping all kinds of artifacts into the drawing when I first tried using it. I'll continue to monitor with different drawings for different projects.

Just an update on this issue:

I did another test with HQGEOM off and the problem resurfaced. It definitely seems related to that variable being off. On my work computer, since a different initial bug I had with HQGEOM hasn't resurfaced, that hasn't been a problem having that setting turned on and thus the bug experienced in this thread is a non-issue. For my home computer, HQGEOM is disabled (non-certified card) and so I can't turn it off. Again, in AutoCAD 2016 the problem does not appear on either computer regardless of the HQGEOM setting.
